Looking for any input on setting up home network

Happy Halloween everyone,

I recently received a new Asus rt-n66u router as a gift. Before I even attempt to set up a home network. I wanted to get some input/feedback on how I should go about doing this correctly?

If anyone could point me in the right direction to a website or video that could help me out with a bunch of questions I have on this, (as I know people are busy) it would be greatly appreciated!!

My questions for now are:

1. Firmware I should use with new router?

2. Best option or way to set up my home network? House is a 1500 sq. foot bungalow and my devices are Panasonic TC-P55ST60, Macbook Pro (Mid 2012) OS Yosemite 10.10, Apple TV 3 and iPhone 4s.

3. Can I add Plex and XBMC using current devices or would I need to set up a separate server w another device?

I think that's all for now, if I am overlooking anything that you think I should also take into consideration, please feel free to let me know.
