Most likely a screen failure, or a cable issue. Not much you can do about it except have it repaired. What iMac is it and is it still in warranty/AppleCare?

Whenever I've seen this and and it's a pixel wide vertical line it has always been a defective LCD. These symptoms can also be intermittent. Not good news if it's out of warranty.

Screen failure, corrosion at the cable connection, faulty cable, either way, sad to say, there is no easy fix and all the options are expensive, unless, you still have some warranty coverage.

it is not under warranty, my iMac 21.5 inch 2017

It would only be under some sort of warranty if you happen to have purchased at least a 5 year all inclusive warranty if you bought it new. I would doubt if that was possible or have been available.

The standard warranty for that machine was normally 1 Year Warranty.

Check with a local Mac Service Store (NOT an Apple Store!!!) and see if they could not replace it at a reasonable price and using a used replacement screen. Reputable stores would give you some sort of guarantee or warranty.

As the OP is resident in the UK (based upon a previous post) there was always a possibility of making a European consumer law claim if the iMac was bought from Apple in the UK and for his own use not in a business name, and has the original receipt/invoice, but it is likely too old now. Maybe worth investigating especially if the problem has been intermittent for some years.

The first post said it just started.

I'm not at all familiar with the European consumer law claim limitations but maybe they are still covered.

And I doubt some of the hits and suggestions available on the web can fix things easily as some of them seem to suggest:
How to fix horizontal or vertical lines on Mac’s screen

And more hits here to at least maybe glance through:

I see one of the solutions that worked for one user I glanced at was changing their iMac display resolution, so I guess no one ever really knows what might works until one tries. ;)

EDIT:
I guess this is a quick summary of what the consumer EU law states:
For any defect in a one-off purchase that becomes apparent within 1 year, it is assumed that it existed at that time of the sale, unless the supplier can prove otherwise. However, you can file a claim for a period of at least 2 years.

As it is 6yrs old I don't think I could make claim on anyone,I will persevere as it is hard to see depends on the colours on the screen. thanks to you all for your replies
