Some idiot was a bit heavy handed and pushed the screen back too far on my MBP and now when I try to close the top it stops about an inch away from being flat and you need to push it down to close it. You can see that it's straining to keep shut and there is a gap between the base and the screen.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? My guess is that the hinge mechanism is now out of alignment or slightly bent.

Indeed, he fubared your hinge clutch. It will likely need to be replaced now, which isn't cheap.

In the mean time I highly recommend NOT closing the computer, as you can damage the top frame and LCD from the added stress of the latch trying to stay shut with a bent hinge clutch.
