Kernel Panic?

So yesterday I received my new 2017 MacBook Pro 13" in the mail. Lastnight I was setting it all up, downloading all the apps I use, importing music and pictures.

Then it goes black. It turns back on and I see "Your computer restarted because of a problem".

After doing some googling I learn this was a "Kernel Panic".

I shut it down and then turned it back on while holding D and did a hardware test, and there were no issues. Was this then caused by a software issue with one of the apps I downloaded?

I just want to make sure this isn't "dangerous" for my computer - it's literally 24 hours old.

See attached.... can anyone tell me what caused it so I can remove the program?

Please uninstall Sophos first and foremost. You do not need any antivirus software on macOS, regardless of what the marketing says.

The error happened within 'mds', which is the component of macOS that is responsible to scanning your filesystem for changes and so on. When you have antivirus software running it also wants to scan everything you store on your machine and not only is this a resource hog, it will likely cause issues..

Yes, it's been uninstalled. So.... that should take care of it, I shouldn't have any more issues?

Are kernel panics bad for your computer? Do they do any permanent damage?

Thank you!!!

Kernel panics cause no permanent damage, it's an indicate of either a SW or HW issue. If you have failing hardware, a KP will show that and indicate replacement, but the bulk of KPs are usually software problems and so removing the culprit software is usually the best fix..

No problem, enjoy your new Mac. However, remember that apart from the free 1 year of AppleCare on that machine you are within the 14 day return period, so make sure that everything is working as it should and everything is stable. If not, you can ask for a replacement..

Is there a way to see if everything is stable? Aside from the KP happening from sophos everything else seems fine so far. Do you recommend I switch it out anyways?

The KP is a good indication of things going awry, it happening once and you rectifying it and not reoccurring again is good. Beyond that, the machine should "just work" whenever you need it without any issues like graphical glitches, slowness, no beachballs..

So go ahead and use the machine like you normally would, I don't think a swap is necessary..

See how Sophos heads the kext (kernel extensions) list? That shows it is the problem.

Do not use antivirus or cleaning apps, other than Onyx, on your lovely new MBP. Do consider Malwarebytes for Mac and extensions such as Ghostery, AdBlock Ultimate both of which are available from Apple under Extensions in the Safari preferences.

Yes I did install Malwarebytes from cnet today. And I'm happy to report that no KP's have happened since that isolated incident yesterday :) Yay! I can't believe how fast these new machines are.... I was using an old 2011 MacBook Pro. What a difference!

NEVER download anything from CNET, Softonic or MacUpdate as they include little nasties.

It is always better to download from the developers site. Also there is a free version of Malwarebytes for Mac so suggest not paying an annual fee. Post back if you need that version.

Just my two cents worth but I'd avoid the CNET site for software downloads in the future. They have developed quite a reputation for adding other installers to much of the software that on their site. This has been a common practice on Windows sites for years. Same goes for Softonic and MacUpdate.comI used to use MacUpdate but they have started doing the same thing.

I used to use the MacUpdate site regularly but not so much anymore. I use it now I search for the names of software I might be interested in and then download the software directly from the developer's site or form the App Store if it is there.

Should I uninstall Malwarebytes and re-install from somewhere else? I'm having a hard time finding the free version from the developer. How do I see if anything else was included in the cnet download?

It's hard to tell what CNET may have added. The website for malwarebytes is malwarebytes.com. Just download it, don't pay for anything. In a month, it will revert to the free version on it's own.
