Kernal_task

So as far as I understand, kernal_task is the heart of the OSX operating system. Well on top of that, its also killing mine. For some reason and with out any warning kernal_task will use all of my computers cpu causing it to temporarily go into a black screen. Has anyone had similar problems or know a way to fix this? Is my computer screwed? Should I send it back to apple?
