When I send an email, the outgoing activity monitor shows multiple emails being sent.
I sent myself a test email, and it's not arrived.
When I start my emails, it can take over quarter of an hour before it gets mail.
I've changed my ISP email password to no avail.
I've run Sophos without identifying any viruses.
I have:
an old iMac (2006) running mountain lion
iPhone 4S on IOS 8.1.2
iPad mini also on 8.1.2
iMacBook Air on Yosemite 10.10.1

Can anyone suggest what is going on?

What email are you using?

BTW Sophos wouldn't identify any viruses on your mac since none exist on OSX.

Have you tried fixing any other errant settings?

It might however pick up any other malware. Just because there are no viruses doesn't mean that other malware isn't lurking around.

This sounds more like a problem on the side of your email provider than anything on your machine(s). Or it could be an issue with your ISP having poor connections or speeds. Is it happening on all of your devices, including the iPhone? If so, then it's definitely on the mail provider side.

IF what you are seeing is the progress bar saying something like,"Sending 13 of 13," that count is for the day, not the sending session. It resets at midnight, I think, and increments all day as you send emails. You can test it easily by sending an email, then immediately sending another and watching that it shows one more.

Once again, Jake, you have explained something I've always wondered about.

I used to watch the progress bar in a haze of happy ignorance. Now I know what these numbers mean. Thanks.
