It's that Catcher In The Rye book again...

The mom of a girl at my school decided she does not want her daughter reading *gasp!* Catcher In The Rye for an ADVANCED PLACEMENT class. It is because she is super religious and her mom does not want to expose her senior-in-high-school daughter to things outside of her tiny box.

I guess I am surprised this still happens. She has every right to not read the book...don't get me wrong. But when does her mom think it will be time for her daughter to see the world? What is going to happen when she IS exposed to the world? I have seen the effects of this first hand at my school.

Some of my relatives are very religious Christians and one of my second cousins home schooled all of her six kids. I think it is good to some extend up to a certain age, but the children need real life experiences to survive rest of their lives. I would not do that to my child.

Being a christian myself, I must confess I actually enjoyed the book. In fact, if I could figure out where it is, I would read it again. She is a senior in high school so I'm guessing 17 or 18 years old, I think she can make her own decisions on what to read. It is after all a fictional book, not a guide to life. I wonder if the mom has actually read the book or if she has made this decision based on what she has heard about it.

I am a pretty religious person myself and I still consider Catcher in the Rye to be my favorite novel. I have read it almost 1-2 times a year since I first read it in 7th grade. Its a book that never gets old and I can read in one sitting

You know, I personally never had to read Catcher in the Rye in high school. Some of my friends did, but the teachers I had never assigned it to the class. I've been thinking about going out and reading it on my own initiative, but I never really got the time (or I simply forgot )

As for the story. Let the mom shield her daughter all she wants. As long as she isn't barring the rest of the class from reading the book, then who cares? It'll be fun to see what happens when mommy dearest has to deal with a daughter who's incapable of dealing with real life because she was so sheltered.

True. It can depend on the individual. If the kids accepts it, they will become their parents. If they reject it? Well, let's just say that those were the kind of girls I was scouting for as a freshman in college! (of course I'm much more older and wiser now.)

If she's a senior in public high school, chances are she already read A Clockwork Orange, A Brave New World, and/or 1984. I would think that any of those would catch much more attention than Catcher in The Rye.

People like that really, really tick me off. There were a few kids in my high school English class whose parents wouldn't allow them to read The Poisonwood Bible. Geez.

I remember my Junior or Senior year of class I had my English teacher call my mom because I was reading in class. Of course, it wasn't what we were supposed to be reading but I already finished that.

My mom laughed at the woman and said, well, isn't that what they're supposed to be doing?

Haven't read. Her mom is nuts. If I was her, I'd tell my mom to go do something not so nice to herself and stop trying to embarass the heck out of me.

A huge number of books are gone over in our AP Lit class, even books some kids might have read before. Plus, our school does not make kids read Catcher In The Rye in any other Language Arts class.
