I'm not a Mac Power User, I'm not a novice. I run my life with my MBP 2012. Never had a problem with Yosemite, let alone any prior Apple OSX upgrade (moved back to Apple with Lion). One or two apps weren't working at first, but major apps quickly came out with upgrades compatible: they know which side their bread is buttered on. My Philosophy - that has worked very well for me - upgrade (with backups) soon after release, maybe in a month or two. The enhanced security alone is worth it. If you have mission critical apps, check with their manufacturers to be sure they are compatible before upgrading.
