It DOES have multitasking, it's just that it's limited to Apple's own native apps. The only people who I've seen complain about the lack of multitasking are those who want to listen to internet radio and browse the web at the same time. Most other programs have Push so you don't really need them running all the time.

As for a USB port, you can get the Camera Accessory Kit

Kash

Exactly Apple native apps. It's not true multitasking. I'm one of those people that want to listen to internet radio, check my email,surf....etc all at the same time.

The camera accessory kit was what I was trying to point out, Apple accessorizing us to death.

Quite the contrary, it is EXACTLY like when the iPhone was announced.

STRONGLY disagree.

When the iPhone came out, I said to myself, "does everything my iPod and blackberry do, combined, in a cooler package and simplistic manner plus the ability to surf the web REALLY well.

The iPad doesn't replace the iPhone or the laptop, doesn't give me a simpler life, it's a "gotta have it as an extra gadget" thing. It is not at ALL like the iPhone launch.

The only way the HP slate is an iPad killer is if you keep your iPad near one, because the HP slate will overheat and melt your iPad, just like an HP laptop.

Um....

The iPad is not a phone or a notebook.... It is a tablet that will revolutionize the tablet industry as the iPhone did for the phone industry. It can easily replace the average user's notebook as it can accomplish most of the same tasks and is more portable.

There is already all of this talk about the iPad and it hasn't even been released, proving a point that it, indeed, is revolutionary.

It is easier to web browse while being mobile than a notebook.

You can hold the thing easily with one hand while browsing the web with the other, try doing that on your MacBook.

I don't care what anyone says, web browsing on the iPhone is painful. The screen is too small, causing strain on my eyes.

So yes, the iPad is indeed going to be "the next gadget".

I have seen some pretty HOT running HP Laptops in my day! :D

I know I sound like a broken record, but lets wait and see how it is when it's in the hands of the public.

Until we all get one in our hands we should all reserve Judgement.

I've been saying that for awhile now.

I also agree with your sentiment that this device is not something that is meant to appeal to those of us who are geeks (myself included). In my opinion, it's aimed at the vast majority of home computer users out there - those who just want to read email, organize some photos and look at Facebook (my wife, being a good example). What remains to be seen is whether it's enough to really appeal to that market (at least more so than a traditional netbook).

I'm sure when it's first released Apple will get that initial surge, Hopefully like the iPhone maybe we'll see a price drop.

That would be nice, but I have my doubts. It should be interesting to see how it plays out. Marketed properly, I think it will maintain momentum for quite some time, if for no other reason than the novelty factor.

There's already quite a bit of buzz surrounding it in the masses. In my professional life, I often get asked about new tech (and not many people know that I'm a Mac enthusiast). I can't tell you how many non tech-savvy colleagues have asked me about it. And when I get into what I see as weaknesses, it's typically shrugged off as, "but it's so COOL looking", followed shortly by "I want one!". Rarely do I see that kind of sentiment with other vendor's products (the lone exception being the HP Touchsmart series, which was advertised vigorously on QVC).

So, Apple has really done a good job of building buzz. I think they may very well have hit a nerve with this thing.

10 reasons why the HP slate will never beat the Apple iPad

Here my 10 reasons why HP has no chance:

1) slate runs on windows (slower, more vulnerable, virus problems etc.)
2) slate is mostly just a laptop without a keyboard
3) slate crashes several times a day (hilarious how they offer the option to choose different colored screens of death (green instead of blue haha)
4) the HP touchscreen probably isn't as good as Apple's
5) no-one is gonna use flash in 10 years anymore so thats not a feature
6) HP has a totally different image than Apple. Having a HP device is not half as cool than having an Apple device
7) Slate is way more expensive than iPad (1000 instead of 500 dollars)
8) There is no real release date for the Slate yet. By the time they are on the market there are probably already millions of iPads out
9) people talk way way more about the iPad than about the slate
10) No-one needs multitasking. Human brains are not made to work on many things the same time. So when starting/closing is really fast, you will be even faster than scrolling through 20 open Applications... And Music can always play in the background. Or use your iPhone!!

My opinion.

I am definitely going to develop Apps for the iPad. I am working on a game and on an e-book so far... :$

CWA, want to trade friends and colleagues? Mine are all MAC haters and call the iPad the sex name and say that a Pad is only that. I show them Wikipedia, and all the other sites that show meanings of words and they still argue! :D

On the net though I have seen a lot of people who can't wait to try an iPad. I for sure am interested in the WiFi one.

Come on Apple, lets have a Network Dongle just for me!! :D

I like my friends as people but some are sure biased. I used to be that way as a kid. I learned the hard way to have an open mind and try other things. Saved me a lot of $$$ later in life and got me even better products!
:D

I just wish I had one friend who at least likes OSX. When I say Friend I mean IRL friend. Someone I see and hang with.

UMMMMMMM did you READ my post? Did you READ who's post I was commenting on? I was NOT talking about the iPad being a "revolutionary device" Steve, I was talking about the fact that it's NOT the same as when the iPhone came out. It DOESN'T replace any of my current devices so it's launch didn't impact my (or anyone) much at all, especially in comparison to the iPhone.

Tablet industry? LOL cause EVERYONE I know is using a tablet...:|

Do yourself and the forum a favor and read before you type. Thanks.

This is probably by far the most interesting comment, I have read about the iPad and I couldn't agree more.

Yep. There's a reason why the Tablet PC never took off. I'm hoping that Apple has studied it thoroughly and made the design decisions that ultimately make it more appealing.

In my opinion, the Tablet PC manufacturers are trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. They are basically trying to shoehorn Windows and the entire PC paradigm into a formfactor that just doesn't lend itself well to running as a full PC. So, from what I've seen, Apple instead scaled up a very successful platform (the iPod Touch), expanding upon the features to provide the kind of user experience that they think the masses want in a device of this size. Instant boot-up, a UI designed exclusively around touch input, a streamlined OS and a huge library of existing apps.

I'm not saying that the iPad is the perfect device for this form-factor, but I do believe it's a lot better thought out than the traditional TabletPC. And HP's slate is IMO more of the same. MS had this kind of partnership with Acer when the modern TabletPC was first rolled out back in 2003 or so. Fortunately Acer has gotten smart enough to learn from their mistakes. Apparently HP hasn't figured out the same (yet).

That's a really good point, PC tablets have pretty much been a failure. My DR uses one for medical records and prescriptions, Other than that I have never seen one in use any where else. ( I know their a dime a dozen on ebay and craigslist)

Another good point you made was that MS is not designed around touch and this most likely contributed to the failure of the PC tablet. The iPhone OS Is exclusively touch.

I think if non Apple tablets take off they will most likely be Android powered.
