Oops, spoke too soon, my baby is dead.

I'll keep you posted but at present it won't even power up!

In that event, maybe it's a power supply problem?

OK my G5 has a sense of humour!

This morning it was dead as a dead thing that has started to smell bad, so I go off to work thinking really bad thoughts and when I come home it is still dead. so then I post on here using my iMac telling you guys my bad news and then go back to my baby to see if I can fix it and guess what, the little bugger started up as if nothing was wrong and presented me with the innocent little logon prompt!

I have left the cheeky blighter to download some Mp3's and come back to my reliable iMac to post this.

Hmmm ... the G5 powered up fine but refused point blank to respond to the CD eject key (it probably figured I wanted to use the hardware test CD) so I accepted the GarageBand upgrade it offered me (39M download to upgrade!) and then rebooted. Now everything seems fine, that's the last time I ever put it to sleep again!

Maybe it got upset when I put it to sleep last night but the fan noise was driving me nuts (yesterday was a particularly hot day and I left the window closed, maybe it wants me to buy it some air conditioning ;)).

Hmmm. Well, you are not the first person that I have ran across that has had problems, because, they put their Mac to sleep.

I guess they don't do well when they are sleeping.

Definitely doesn't like sleeping. ;)

It does like working hard though.

I thought that sleeping a Mac was good for it.......Especially a G5.....Is it common for the G5 to just "conk" out like that out of no-where?

I have an idea that it may have someting to do with the two processors, judging by the problems I've seen aired here and at other forums I reckon they are sensitive to timing issues when cold or very hot, possibly it comes down to bus conflicts which causes start up problems whereby the logic board gets confused and maybe marks one or other of the processors as faulty.

Maybe on the slower bus systems like the 1.6 or 1.8 this is less of an issue as I've only seen similar complaints about the 2G model.

Personally I can put up with the odd peculiar behaviour as long as the machine stays up when I need it to.

Is your machine still under warranty? If so, I wouldn't "put up" with the machine crashing when it goes to sleep. I'd consult someone at the Apple Store and see what they think. Especially if you can demonstrate the problem for them. I'd be jimmy'd before I would put up with a $2800 machine that couldn't go to sleep without crashing.

Demonstrating it would be the problem, it's only done it once and I can't be sure that it wasn't some sort of glitch on the power line but I'll see how it behaves for the next few months or so.

Even if I did send it back they would probably blame the non-apple memory I installed before admitting there is a design problem with the G5 twin set-up.
