iPod as an external HD

how do I go about using my 40GB iPod as an external HD? The thing is my iPod is windows formatted and I want to use it as an external for my iBook (to store pics and Apple Works documents, etc...)

Just connect it to your iBook, and it will be recognised as iPod.

Mac OS X can read a Windows formatted iPod, but not the other way around.

Well, do you suggest that I format it using my WIndows PC and then run it off both my PC and iBook? Because I'm going to be using my iBook as my main system and wish to back up my files on it. However, if I need to transfer some files to a friend's PC (Windows) and I formatted it using Mac OS X, then I would be stuck right?

Well, if you want to use it as file transfer between Mac and PC, or PC and PC, then I suggest you to format it on your PC. If it's Mac formatted, no PC will be able to read or write anything on the iPod.
Allthough, as far as I know, you can only use one iTunes library, either the one on your Mac or the one on your PC. If your library is on the Mac, the iPod can still be PC formatted.
