So I want to use iphoto to import and organize my photo's i have a few questions.

1. When i import from my camera how do rename all the photos i import when i import? like pic1.jpg pic2.jpg

2. How can i nest albums, to have lots of albums in side one main topic like vacation, family etc

3. If i edit a photo am i editing the original?

4. There are lots of folders created by iphoto - data, modified, originals, what do these mean? there seem to be a copy my my pics in each folder taking up 3 time as much space.

5. if i import will it move my pics to the iphoto library?

6. if i copy a paste a pic from one album to another am i actually copying the photo or a alias to it? I need a album that i can copy a paste photos to so i can down size for email and i don't want to change the original.

I know i have alot of question, but if there is a iphoto export out there you may be able to help me, or direct me to a web page of iphoto knowledge.

Thanks

I am a bit drunk and pressed for time so bare with me. You can put photos in albums by dragging from the library to the desired album....ala itunes.

If you import multiple sets of pictures with the same topic I.e baseball.
Just rename one of the rolls baseball and when ever a new roll pops up after import just drag the photo or entire roll into the baseball roll. This also changes its saved location in the finder to that of the baseball one. When you edit a photo you are editing the original but you can always click a button and revert to the original. in the finder you'll fine modified pics and original pics.

Go to iphoto preferences and uncheck the copy to iphoto option otherwise you are using double the space.

Hi, I'm no expert, BUT ... I finally decided to sort out my 1994 individual photos into groups etc and subsequently discovered some of the neat features that were hitherto unknown to me a month ago ...

1. When you import photos just highlight them in the Library Window and right-click and select Batch Rename and in the 2nd pull-down menu, select Text and also there's a box to tick if you want numbers appended as well.

While your at it, open iPhoto -> Preferences -> Keywords and rename some of those keywords to what you really need them to be. When finished, right-click on one or several photos in the main Library window and select Show Info. Assign an appropriate KeyWord as per one you prepared earlier.

2. Highlight a group of photos that fall within a catagory/keyword etc and drag them to the Sources Pane to the left. An Album will be created and you can just name it accordingly. Next, select all the photos in this album and assign an appropriate keyword.

3. If you edit a photo, iPhoto keeps the original pristine, in case you want to revert to the original, as in ...Photos -> Revert To The Original.

While this takes up space it is worth it to have the original intact. If you don't plan to use the original, before you edit - right-click the photo in question and select Show File. Keep the Finder window that opens in the Background and memorise the name of the file or highlight it for the next step. Return to iPhoto and go on editing the photo and save it. Then go to the opened Finder Window and delete the original - you won't be deleting the edited copy.

4. Leave those nested iPhoto folders as they are or things can get messy.

5. Any photo/s you import are imported straight to:

YourUserName -> Pictures -> iPhoto Library,

and an alias is placed within the iPhoto Application Library Window. It's an alias nothing more.

6.
The main Library window is full of alias'. If you drag'n'drop any of the alias' - they remain alias'.

You can have the same photo in several Albums but it's an alias non-the-less. If you delete an alias from an Album in the left Source Pane, they are not deleted from your Library display Window NOR are they deleted from:

YourUserAccount -> Pictures -> iPhoto Library.

There is an option in the menu somewhere for a particular photo/s to be sent in an email, so just select the photo/s and go to:

Share -> Email.

This launches Mail.app with a new message window open and the emails already attached... how cool!

Finally, you can create as many Albums, or Folders to store those Albums, as you like. So I have a Folder named Family, and within it are several Albums to do with the KeyWord "Family". You can also drag a folder from your desktop containing photos, straight to the Source Pane and it will automatically be grouped into an Album and you will be prompted to name it.

Hope this helps you out.

I uploaded this vid to YouTube last week, it shows how you can drag'n'drop folders of photos from the Desktop into iPhoto.

1. Once you have imported your pictures you can rename them.Press the "i" button bottom left and just click on the picture title.

2. If you have say Albums call my Easter trip or summer trips or some such you can merge them and call the result my trips 2006 . Select the albums (CMD-click)Make a new album.Select all the visible thumbnails and drag them to the folder.

3.NO. You can at any time choose "Photos---Revert to original.

4.Data contains jumbo thumbnails organised in year month day structure
Albumdata xml Store access permissions
Dir.data,iPhoto.db,Libraray.data Libraray6.iPhoto Internal use only documents. Your keywords and such are stored there.
Originals Are just that.

DON'T MESS AROUND IN THE ABOVE FILES

5.You can use image capture in your application folder open it go to preferences and choose General . Start no application. You can then connect your camera start up Image capture and choose how many and where you want to put them before import. I usually just import a few into iPhoto.
6.

You are just copying an alias I think rather like tracks in playlists in iTunes. To downsize for e-mail use the share function in iPhoto you then get to choose what size you want to send the pictures in

PS. I'm no expert I just use iPhoto a lot...Good luck

I wouldn't rename the file iPhoto may have trouble finding it.
You can in fact confine your keyword search to an album or folder By selecting it before searching. Or for example using the calendar function in the source list. You can do the same selecting multiple albums too.

You can search using multiple keywords too just go to the preferences pane click on keywords and choose ANY

you can just use OPTION+Shift+Cmd+N or go to file new folder.
Then you can make new folders and drag albums into them. Even other folders

I would stick to changing names and leave the rest for iPhoto to organise

iImport with Automator

You can import selected pictures using Automator. This may be the way to go if you rename your files before you import them to iPhoto. This is because iPhoto uses the file name find things again.

The Automator is easy to use. Start like this

1.Open Automator

2.In the library column ,choose Finder

3. In Actions double click "Get specified Finder items

4.Click the Flippy Triangle Turn on "Show when run"

5.In the library choose iPhoto Double click "Review Photos"

6. In action column again choose "Import to iPhoto" then click show selected items select "New Album"

7. Click on the flippy triangle turn on "Show action when Run " and "Show selected item"

8. Go to file "Save as Plug-in" Finder is selected save with a name you can call iPhoto import or some such

9. To use just right click on your desktop and select Automator actions you should see in listed there. and away you go.

When you run the action you tell the Automator where the items you want to import are by clicking the "+" sign and choosing your file/files. then you are presented with a review of each picture which you can accept for import or not. Then a album is created in iPhoto with a name you have choosen .

I have attached some thumbnails to show what things look like when you run the program...

Have fun

Is there an easy way to find duplicates like in itunes or do I have to go through checking and deleting manually.

Thansk for the tip, it took some out but I need to get to grips with iPhoto.
All I have done is dump pictures into it, so I need to get it in some sort of shape

Thanks for the offer of help, Kilted. It's mostly my own fault and I'm not sure I have patience left to learn. :[

I hate how pics are sorted in Finder = Year Folder > Roll Folder.

I realize now I saved all my photos the wrong way the first time. I saved directly to iPhoto (I emailed some to myself and used a thumb drive for others because PC kept locking up when I networked the two computers).

I also made the mistake of renaming the iPhoto Library folder after I installed the Canon software, so when I clicked on iPhoto it told me it couldn't find Library. I won't even go into my machinations before I figured that out. :Grimmace:

I understand Image Browser, iPhoto just doesn't seem worth it.

Never mind. The important thing is that you have an app you are happy with. If you do decide to swop back you know where to come ;)
