iPhoto Modified Folder

For some reason when I import *new photos shot today with my SLR, iPhoto is creating a modified folder for some shots even thought they havent been touched. Can anyone explain why this might be happening?

I tried deleting the library and creating a new one but that just did the same thing. I'd like to start using iphoto but not if its going to start duplicating photos for no reason.

I believe iPhoto creates a folder of thumbnails, what size are the images in that folder?
