The "Late Night" setting for the iPhone/iOS Music equalizer (Settings > Music > EQ > Late Night) is actually the only one that DOES work on audio output aside from just Music. It's a dynamic range compressing function that mostly levels vol, but I've found it does help a bit with bass reduction. It's not super dramatic, but it does help.
Best bet is good headphones, as it sounds like you've discovered. I've become more and more careful about checking the sound profile on headphones before buying, because there's a trend toward more bass = more buyers (mainly due to music genre popularity).
