They do that if it's an eBay auction. They hold the funds for 21 days, or 4 days after they can confirm delivery via tracking numbers, or until the buy leaves positive feedback on the auction.
The problem with other transactions is that it's impossible for PayPal to know exactly what the money is for if it's a transaction between two private people. That didn't originate via a shopping cart utilizing the PayPal API.
And face-to-face isn't always better either. Just wait until you get paid with counterfeit cash. Just Google for Craigslist horror stories.
Scammers are everywhere, you can't avoid them, you just need to be smart about your transactions.

Excellent news RotM. It's nice to hear when something works out in the end. Congrats. Generally, it takes Paypal 3 days to post something to my checking and 3 to 5 days to post to my CC. Mileage may vary.

I dont know if this matter or not but i am still a little angry that the roach was a flake but i found on macrumors that she is an active poster under the name "Buddhaluver" and even though she has not sold anything would it be it be appropriate to let fellow posters know she did what she did?
I definitely would, she clearly tried to scam multiple people on this site. To me, shes pretty bold posting regularly on other sites under the same username after attempting to scam people. I might go make an account over there and just post wherever she posts saying that shes a scammer. People deserve to know.

She was very forward with communicating at first, but then fell off the face of the earth and never mailed it. I googled her and found this post, and immediately filed a claim with PayPal. I'm waiting to get my money back. Thanks for having posted this so I could move quickly! (She's now trying to sell the EXACT same thing under the EXACT same name as she had on Bonanza with the EXACT same pictures). Either she's got a lot of nerve or she's stupid. I'm glad to hear that you got your money back and I'm hoping the same thing happens for me!
