I recently gave my iPad Air 2 to a friend. Before giving it to them I reset the device and wiped the data. When my friend tried setting it up they were prompted at one point for a device passcode. However, they had not yet set one up. How could that be?

Is it still attached to your AppleID? Resetting and wiping the device is fine, but when it's set up, it checks with Apple to see if the device is attached to an AppleID and if it is, asks for the passcode you had previously assigned. It's a security function to reduce the attractiveness of stealing it.

Here is Apples list of things to do before you give away a device: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201351

I did wonder whether it was still attached to my Apple ID so I told my friend to try using the passcode I used for the device but that did not work. Really stumped about how it could want a passcode when one hasn’t been set up. I think he’ll have to use a computer to restore it.

Trying to be helpful rather than facetious; but are you sure it was the Device's Passcode (ie 6 numbers) that was being asked for rather than your Apple ID (email plus Password).

In a way, this would make more sense because, as you said, inputting or (actually) creating a Passcode is a much later operation & possibly even optional - can't recall if it is or not.

Pretty sure it wasn’t the Apple ID pw that was being requested but I’ll double check with him on that. Thanks.

You can look in iCloud, to see if the device is still signed in to your Apple/iCloud ID. Once you sign in, click on Account Settings and it will display all of the devices you are still signed into. Click on the device and a new window will open and you will have the option to delete the device from your Apple ID. There is also an option for Lost, Sold or gave away the device.

The old, "I gave my device to a friend but first I wiped all the data" problem is usually caused by not following the freely available online instructions for this process. I don't mean to be too critical and your situation may be different but below is a link to Apple's instructions on what to do before selling trading in or giving away an iDevice. If you have not followed these instructions to the letter you and or the recipient of the device are going to have problems into the future. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201351
