Ditto re iMazing. Great app.

Yes, otherwise I would have been without an iPhone untill late June. Too expensive to buy over here in Bali and due to no trade agreement with Apple no real warrenty. Not to mention the waste, I would really hate to have to trash such great valuable device.

So, I would advise approaching this "supplemental" update with some caution, especially for older models but maybe that's not a factor, who knows?

What I can say is the download ran the progress bar to the end before beginning the update of the phone. Progress got about half way on install before displaying the failure notification.

My concern is that there is nothing I can advise to prepare for the possibility of failure with this update other than a current backup which you may not be able to use with the Finder.

Even iMazing was unable to apply the update but it did erase the phone before trying. That could have been due to the Apple Servers but the restore from backup was an unexpected bonus.

I somewhat regret going down that line. It worked; yes; but it took ages and at one point it looked like it had gone into DFU Mode.

All's well now, for sure. I wonder why this particular Update was not advertised more widely and why ONLY via USB link to an appropriate Mac?

Almost everyone that I know, updates their iPhone over night via the Update part of their iPhone. USB-to-Mac isn't anything like as popular as it ways a few years ago, I think.

Ian, when you say, "and at one point it looked like it had gone into DFU Mode." What actually did happen.
I got the white USB cord to Computer screen after ejecting and forcing shutdown from an Apple logo with a white progress bar that after 10 min had not progressed at all.
Of course I had already gotten the Update Failed notification from Finder.

I may be using the wrong terminology, but for about 5-10 seconds max, it looked like this:

This occurred after the download and it seemed to be during the backup stage. Truth is, it happened so suddenly and unexpectedly that I can't be more helpful than that.

I suspect the reason for the USB-only nature of the update is the firmware that seemed to be updated. If DFU mode was needed for that phase, it would be unwise to try that over the air. Apple hasn't said anything about this release that I can find. And it's not a change in version, it's still 17.4.1, but the build number is different. Very strange.

Boy am I glad I checked this thread again. I'll make sure I do an iMazing backup first.

I think my problem last night is I didn't go through Finder to get the update.

I'll have to write it off to lack of food las t preparation for surgery this morning. Lol

Here we updated 3 phones (a 15PM, 13 and 12) and 3 iPads. All went smoothly apart from the very last one - my wife's 12. Got a message saying the update could not be installed "due to a problem" and her phone then needed to be restored from a backup.

On the phone, Settings, General, About, tap on the iOS Version number and the resulting screen gives the details.

Ah, so my build number is currently 21E236. At least while I'm still here in Bali I might just hold back on updating until either it's released as an OTA version or I'm back in Australia, unless, I could get hold of the IPSW file as a download.

Heres another article on the topic:

Included are the three suggested steps to take if you are a victim of one of these attacks, Number 1 being Decline, Decline, Decline.
It also points out that these attacks are not new being highlighted by users for 2 years or more.

Thanks for the well wishes guys. I had the first cataract removal surgery last week and the second was this morning (Tuesday). So far, things have gone well but I will have to wait a bit for my vision to completely stabilize.

I'm going to get some more sleep and deal with the updates tomorrow.

Hi Sly - hope that all goes well w/ a quick recovery - wife had the surgery a few years back and did well - her replacement 'lenses' have worked well for far distance. As a physician, I spent a month on ophthalmology in the senior year of medical school (1970-71) and cataract surgery was a major procedure then but now so much easier! Dave :)

I think so too!! So much so, that I am NOT going to follow suit with my iPad or my wife's iPhone 14 Pro. :) (y)
