Sorry, I was posting from my iPhone, thinking of one thread but responding in this one. Ignore that post. Your first picture seem to imply that the OS on the boot drive is not supported by the CPU in the Mac. That may be if the OS on the boot drive is too old for the CPU in the Mac, i.e., older than the Mac at manufacture. The other picture didn't load, apparently.

That's the name of 10.6 version of the OS. I don't know if 10.6.3 will boot on a machine shipped with 10.6.6 or not. It might.

NOPE!!! At least not in my experience. The MBPros up until the mid 2011 needed 10.6.6 as a minimum.

BTW: The last time I had to order a SL Install disk for my 27" 2011 iMac from Apple, the one I received was for 10.6.7.
A fairily plain white disk with "Not for Resale" across it.

Full MBPro specs:
https://everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/index-macbookpro.html

And that MBPro is not going to boot properly unless it has a pristine and compatible OS to boot from. Anything other than that is going to be like teaching a pig to sing or fly.

So I spoke with Apple earlier and he said the they ship SL 10.6.8 and it should work with my macbook. I guess I will have to give it a try $20 isnt too bad. And I burned a SL dmg to dvd and my optical read it and spit out the same result as the usb so it seems my optical drive works. I will order the disk and let everyone know what happens.

So I guess I need 10.6.6 or later for it to work?

If the optical drive in that machine is working, it should boot from the 10.6.8 DVD that Apple will sell you. The plain white DVD with a picture of the Snow Leopard on it (if it's 10.6.6 or later) will work. Now all you have to hope is the optical drive in that machine is working OK. You might want to buy a can of compressed air and blow a few short blasts (from about a foot away) into the drive to clear out the dust and debris. Let us know.

I gather that you're joking when you say that for some reason I guess I missed:( i.e.: (from about a foot away).

I hope the OP doesn't take that seriously. :\

That blast tube needs to be right inside that optical drive's slot when fired.

Nope. That may cause damage to the drive. Actually, the 12" away is a good compromise. You can get closer but not much more. You also have to realize that up real close will also create condensation from the cold air.

And here I was thinking you were joking!!!

BTW: The recommended optical cleaner disks probably put more pressure on any lens or internal parts than any compressed air/gas would, and no fluid should be coming out the tube if the can is held upright properly.

Anyway, using compressed gas and disk cleaners have been an approved and recommended cleaning methods for years and I've never heard of either doing any damage. And heck, what can the user loose if the drive isn't even working before any cleaning attempt??? :\

LOL I think I will avoid spraying the canned air in the the optical drive.
So update. I got the disk from Apple. Says on the packaging 10.6.3. Bummer. So I say "what the ****" I'm going to try it. And Apple says they will refund my money if its not right anyway. So I put the disk in. And hold "c" upon hearing chime. Apple logo appears and it seems like its doing something. Then... beeps. 3 beeps..pause.. 3 beeps...etc, etc. What the ****. Diagnostics say not trouble found and 3 beeps is RAM problem right? I re-
seated RAM several times same result. I am on the fence about ordering new ram modules. But I don't want to give up. And I don't know if this disk will work, although I don't get the panic errors with this one. Any ideas?

So, was Apple not informed as to the particular MBPro model you have that needed 10.6.6 as a minimum??
https://everymac.com/systems/apple/...-15-early-2011-unibody-thunderbolt-specs.html

That's really poor if that was the case, and yes, three beeps at boot time normally indicates something wrong in the RAM department.

To double check the OS X version of the disk, you could try holding down the option key while you boot with the Install Disk inserted, and it may provide an icon with the OS X version it actually contains.

Personally, I'm surprised it booted as far as you say if it really is a 10.6.3 Install Disk.

I guess you'll be calling Apple again and I'd suggest you be VERY clear as to your Mac's specs and the existing problem(s).

Or maybe contact a local Mac tech who may have some spare RAM to try etc. etc. but you apparently don't want to do that.

Your choice and call I guess…

At least the optical drive seems to be working and without doing any blow job on it!!!

The woman I spoke with told me it should have been shipped with 10.6.6 or Lion, most likely SL. She also informed me that the version they were shipping me was 10.6.8. Obviously not the case. As for the the 3 beeps being ram related. See the following link. That is my issue exactly. I will go to the apple store tomorrow and attempt to get the correct disk. The saga continues...

@ Patrick:

It's like we have been reminding folks... the Snow Leopard DVD that Apple sells is 10.6.3 on the label. Going to the Apple Store is probably what he needs to do although they are not going to work on his MacBook Pro since it's vintage.

Interesting and quite possible, as most of us Mac users usually only have the info that Apple might provide for some problems.

Quite likely Charlie and that's why I always advocate any user whose Mac may need a later version (than 10.6.3) to call Apple's Customer Support and explain the situation. They normally ship the correct version or maybe a later one. But a bit of a slip-up it seems in the case above.

I did call them and spent a half hour on hold while the girl was finding only to get cut off. Called back and the girl I got looked it up and said it was 10.6.8. It's been a crazy time with this thing.

It will be interesting if you get a followup email asking for your feedback about your recent call to Apple Support and what your comments might be.

Hopefully you'll have everything working soon.
