Insurance Suggestions?

I just purchased the refurbished iMac27" and can't wait to get it when it is delivered later this week. When I purchased my first MacBook 3 years ago, I also purchased Apple Care because accidents do happen, and I wanted to know my investment was safe.

A year and a half later, I was crushed when my Macbook got wet and stopped working. Of course that was not covered. I want coverage with this new iMac that I'm getting. Do any of you have any suggestions for any companies offering insurance coverage on Macs, preferably the model I'm getting? I don't need theft covered, but accidental damage, liquid damage included, and any other problems would need to be covered for at least 2 years. Let me know. Thanks!

No cover for liquid damage. If you check the threads you will see your new machine has Liquid Submersible Indicators to prevent warranty claims for liquid damage. It is quite staggering the number of posts about tea, coffee, wine, soda, etc etc spills on laptops. Keep liquids away!

General Rule: Buy AppleCare for laptops and Minis, pass on it for other desktop Macs, including iMacs. No guarantees!

I can't imagine why you would need liquid damage coverage for a desktop machine unless you plan on using it outside in the rain or while taking a shower. :(

In any event the choice of insurance is up to you. Try "Safeguard" insurance. They sell insurance for computers, both notebook and desktop.

Regards.

Yup, it's pretty redundant to buy applecare for a desktop that is staying in one place. There is almost a zero risk of you yourself causing physical harm to your desktop unless you are doing something really dumb (like throwing a football in the house). If anything goes bad in the way of hardware, hopefully is shows up in the first year because then it will still be covered by apple.

If you feel compelled to get the 2 extra years, go for it. But most of the time, applecare ends up being an unnecessary expense. (Remember, this is for desktops. Different story for laptops).

Or drinking cordial or coffee whilst using the iMac? See it all the time.

Yep. Bad habit, that. Our computer is far enough away from the beverages to keep it safe. I never eat or drink anything while at the Mac.

Most home owners and Rental insurance policies cover your "stuff". Your iMac would fall under that heading. If you have either type of insurance, make sure your insurance company company includes this in your policy and knows what specific "stuff" you have (Computers, TVs, Stereos, iPods etc) along with the serial numbers and they will cover them in case of loss, theft or damage. This is pretty standard, your deductible will apply.

Most home owners policies as baggss has advised cover things like computers, stereos, TVs, etc. The only problem I see with depending on that type of insurance is as baggss pointed out - the deductible. Here in Texas it's almost impossible, money wise, to purchase a home owners policy that does not carry at least a 1% deductible. Which means if the value of your home is $200,000 (average in my area) the deductible is $2000.00.

One reason why I carry a separate scheduled policy for certain high value items at 0% deductible. But of course that means extra cost for insurance.

Regards.
