Installing RAM

I'm getting my iMac tomorrow.
I have 16GB of ram, should I install it before I even boot up the computer?
Or should I turn it on and then install the ram?

Doesn't really matter I guess, but I always boot a machine prior to doing anything to make sure it works as it should from the factory. Only takes a few minutes and then you are ready to shut down and install memory.

+1 Great advice! Make sure the computer works properly before doing any upgrades/modifications.

And be careful putting memory in that iMac! You're going to have to remove the 2 resident modules (2 x 2 GB) and put the 4 x 4 GB modules in both the upper and lower banks.

From experience, those modules are in tight, and also require considerable force to seat properly. Use a soft cloth to press down on - it'll save your thumbs.

agree with JohnCL but also for your own knowledge of how much improvement you get with added ram... maybe a benchmark prog would be cool to see also.

Dumb question but why did you have to buy 16 gigs? Why can't you add 12 to the 4 that it comes with?

Only 4 slots, so no way to add 12 to get 16.

Oh thanks. So you can add 8 to get up to 12 but not 16. Didn't know the 2 gig chips each sucked up a slot. Thx
