Hi Luke

I have original 10.2.1 software install & restore discs, also Hardware Test, which came with my G4 Powerbook (still running!)

If you would like to borrow, send me PM with address & chuck in a stamp or two when you return

OP has a Powerbook G3. You have a Powerbook G4. Your original gray disks will not work on a Powerbook G3. Those gray disks are model specific.

If these are grey discs, unfortunately they will only work for the PowerBook G4 they came with.

Cheers :)

I appreciate the offer, but I've already sorted out the hard drive arrangement with Hugh, and I do indeed have a G3 Powerbook.

Oh, and I thought you'd better have some pictures (even though they don't really show the bronzeness of the keyboard that well, and date from before I replaced the optical drive):

Well, I have the hard drive from Hugh, but unfortunately it seems that the system no longer wants to spin the hard drives up (it won't spin the 6GB either) - which is odd, because I'm sure it was doing so before. I may try getting hold of another hard drive cable and see if that fixes it. but otherwise, I'm confused and stumped for now. And there's nothing wrong with the drive you sent Hugh - I just put it in a Dell Latitude C600, and it span up fine.

Sorry to hear that, I wonder if a bad cable was the problem all along.
I still have a Pismo in bits up in the loft; I wonder if the HD cable would be the same as a Lombard?
Will try find out and let you know.

Cheers :)

Yeah, I'd seen the ridiculous prices of the hard drive cables on eBay for the UK-based one. It does look, however, like the Lombard and Pismo cables are exactly the same, and, in fact, that most Powerbook G3 models use the same cable - so if you'd be willing to send me it for the cost of P&P (or a couple of quid and P&P), I'd definitely be willing to try it and see. :)

Well, I've found the defunct Pismo in the loft, and can send you the hard drive cable, but first a few diagnostic questions:-
Is there an life in the Lombard when you turn it on? Does the screen fire up?
If no life, check seating of CPU card.
If still dead, lift keyboard and disconnect PRAM battery, then try again.
If you've recently changed the RAM, check the modules are seated properly or try putting the old memory back in.

Cheers :)

Don't worry, the system powers on perfectly fine, makes the noise it's supposed to, accesses the DVD drive (or at least sounds like it does) and gets as far as the flashing question mark/floppy drive icon that shows there is no OS installed. I haven't touched the RAM, and I tried fiddling with the PRAM battery as part of my initial attempts to get it to boot off a CD. Previously, I could hear the hard drive spinning, but that no longer appears to be the case with either the 6GB drive I bought, or the drive you sent me. Both span up fine in a Dell Latitude C600 I have. :)

OK great, I'll send you the cable then, probably tomorrow, and cross fingers for you that it's compatible.

Cheers :)

Don't worry about that, it was only a stamp and my wife paid for it in with her post.

Cheers :)
