Installing Airport Express

I have my Wi-Fi system set up with an Apple Time Capsule in my finished basement which is working fine. If I add the Airport Express upstairs on the main level of a walk-out ranch home, what changes/improvements etc. might I expect to see? I know my Internet speeds will not increase since that is a function of my ISP provider. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi Ron.. - you might want to explain 'why' you feel the need to add an AirPort Express to your home network? Do you need a 'range extender' (e.g. poor signal upstairs) or want an ethernet port to attached other devices, such as printers, sound systems, etc.? If so, do you want the second router to be wireless or are you planning to run an ethernet cable to attach the two?

There are plenty of issues to consider in setting up this combination - NOW, I must admit that I'm simply using an AirPort Extreme as my sole router (covers my house fine), so I have no personal experience in adding an extender. If you google 'apple airport express as a range extender', there will be plenty of hits to help you. Also, I have the book below on my iPad (just a $10 Kindle purchase; 2013 publication date) which I've read several times - a section in chapter 8 explains the options that you are asking about, so might be a consideration.

So, please let us know the answers to some of my questions - Dave :)

This could be important. If you use are using a wireless device to add ethernet ports be careful. Some devices, particularly older ones, shut off the ethernet ports if you use the drive to join a network wirelessly.

Thanks for your responses. An Apple Store tech said adding an Express would give me more coverage on my upper level without affecting anything else. That is my only reason.

Hi Ron.. - please place this post in your other thread you started to which I responded - this will keep the conversation together for others to best understand; and be more specific about your upstairs coverage, i.e. are you having an issue? Dave :)
