I am trying to open an Epson Stylus Pro 7880 printer driver ( v 10.85 ) on a 2016 iMac ( Monterey OS )

It was working but has stopped and the computer no longer controls the printer. It doesn't have the printer in it's list anymore. I have tried to add it again but the drop down list of printers doesn't include my 7880 and the driver fails to install. So at the moment I am snookered.

When I try to install the driver from Epson ( 10.85 ) it goes through the installation steps but at the last step I get the message
"The installation failed. The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."

The same driver ( v 10.85 ) was used previously and all was well. This was installed when using Mojave and continued to work when I upgraded to Monterey.

Does anyone have any suggestions / thoughts on this frustrating matter.. Is it something that has got corrupted with the installer?

Any and all suggestions will be most welcome.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. It isn't the printer ( which is connected by USB ) as it works fine on a Windows machine using a driver from Epson.

Regards

Bernard

Did you try to add the Printer in System Preferences (Settings) > Printers/Scanners?

Yes I did that.
When the printer is on and connected by USB it can be seen but when the + button is pressed the driver is not in the drop down list from Apple so I can't add it. Odd really as it was there previously and has been used for the past few years.

It looks to me that its a problem with something having gone funny or broken in theOS. Monterey 12.6.1.

And this is stopping the installation before it has finished.

I may see if I can roll back theOS toa date when I know that the printer was working and see if the driver can thenveinstalled once more asit was .previously.

I like the casual way in which you say, "I may see if I can roll back theOS to a date when I know that the printer was working"
I think it may be easier to address the printer driver issue on Monterey no matter how difficult that may be, than the arduous process involved in rolling back the macOS version which will entail, creating a bootable macOS installer on an EHD, erasing and reformatting your internal HD and restoring all your data from a backup and more. All without any guarantee it will work.

Let's just see if we can solve the problem as it stands. I too have an Epson and may have a clue about the driver but I can't get to my laptop till tomorrow. I'm in bed right now (Southern Hemisphere).

Brenard, may I gently endorse Rod's comments. Rolling back is arduous, time consuming and frequently results in a poor outcome.

Moreover, I feel strongly that the Printer trouble is not related to your upgrade to Monterey. In fact, you said in post #1 that it worked with Monterey - perhaps an earlier version, before an update?

I confess to being a little bit in the dark as to how exactly you used the printer - you mentioned connection via USB. Is this still your method of connecting printer to Mac, or have you tried a wireless connection, assuming the printer allows this?

You are entitled to disagree with me, but my thinking is this is a printer problem/fault unrelated to Monterey.

Hi Ian

The first issue is that the driver from Epson won't install. It gets to the last leg and then a failure message pops up everytime.. see screenshot below. I have deleted the driver and cleared the bin, then downloaded it again from Epson and the same thing happens. "The installation failed. The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance." It was working fine with Monterey before so I am lost really as to what it is. Without the driver being on the Mac (which is the problem) the printer can't be used as Apple don't have this printer in the drop down list when trying to add a printer ( see second screenshot ). It is connected by USB as the printer does not use Wifi and the router is a bit far away to run an ethernet cable which would mean having cables all over the floor.

When I say rolling back I am talking about restore using time machine back up to a date when I know that the printer worked. I don't propose fully reinstalling the OS.

The printer works when connected by the same USB cable to a Windows PC which makes me think that the printer is not the issue.

Cheers

Bernard

For example, have you tried the Epson online service at this site; FAQ Article Page | Epson Europe
I am currently trying to get something from Epson but to date they keep saying use Bonjour. However the printer isn't Wifi so i don't think that this is an option. AS you may have worked out I am not completely computer savvy.

Southern Hemisphere here also. ( Phillip Island )

Yes I did . Unfortunately in the first part where it tells you to install, the printer is not on the list at Epson.

it has home printers but mine is a Large Format 24" Pro

And now their site is down for routine maintenance.

Will try again later with a printer that IS on the list to see if it can be downloaded / installed.

If it can then that rules out the computer maybe.

Process of elimination for me really. The 7880 can be installed on a Windows PC and communicates well with all functions. Unfortunately my photographic workflow ( Lightroom / Photoshop ) are on the iMac

Okay, understood. I had to go to Epson in India to get a driver for my L360 (Eco-Tank) model compatible with macOS 11x (Big Sur) but the same driver worked on Monterey and now Ventura.
I had a look at their page SPT_C11C700021 | Epson Stylus Pro 7880 | Stylus Series | Professional Imaging Printers | Printers | Support | Epson India
See below, note it says, "There are no files available for the detected operating system. Please select a different operating system above." because I'm running macOS 13x but the driver I selected for 11x might just work for Monterey.
Worth a shot?

Hi Rod

Just spent an hour on the blower with Epson support and we went through loads of stuff trying to get the driver to install...but it's no good.. He went through everything at his disposal and ended up suggesting that I speak to Apple and go through it all with them. So that's my morning taken up tomorrow. I will let you know what happens... My money is still on doing a restore using Time Machine to a date where everything was working fine...and then having to reset Lightroom to a saved catalog which has a fair few edits that have been done since the last good known date (17th October )

I have also just discovered that we had a visit from a family member recently who is a bit of a "fiddler" which might explain things. Of course he denies everything...

Thanks again for your time and suggestions.

Don't they always???!! I've had that experience too. I simply ban anybody from my Macs in much the same way as I would my car.

You are trying to install driver version 10.85? Well that may be the problem. I'm on Epson's site, and the current driver for macOS 10.14 (Monterey) is 12.62.

(EDIT: Bah. I see ferrar posted the same link. Have you downloaded this version and tried installing it?

Some other troubleshooting thoughts come to mind. Use Onyx to clean out the caches. Also, running any antivirus or "cleaning" tools in the background?

Hi
I have been on the blower with Epson and 12.62 won't install either. No antivirus or cleaning tools installed.

Then spoke to Apple who went through it all for 90 minutes and the recommendation is to perform a clean install of Monterey, having firstly made my back up again to Time Machine.

Question regarding external hard drive for making a bootable copy of Monterey OS 12.6.1

Is it OK to use a HDD or does it need to be a SSD?

Cheers
