In MS Word for Mac, how do I stop an update notice when I've already updated?

I went into notifications on my MacBook and unchecked everything one of MS Office programs. then opened some docs from my desktop and no update notification. hope this has solved the issue.
I think that worked for me, too! Thanks, lori5060!

I have much the same problem on the stand alone version of MS Office for MacOS 2016 but it is not a system Notification. It appears as below.

View attachment 33807

Of course clicking Check for Updates does nothing other than tell me about the apps that do not require attention and no update option is available for the "4 apps require attention." So I just ignore it or X it. I am not about to switch to 365 nor do I want to spend $150.00 to instal the 2019 version which is still available if you search hard enough.
Thats not to mention the work required to uninstall all the elements of the 2016 version then download the whole package again, register and verify it.

well I have learned that my action previously posted did not work. and I find that word takes so long to load now... the coloured spinning circle often shows... and I dont have any other apps open. grrrrr

I quite like word and all its features...ive grown so used to them over the years. I used to use Word Perfect... back in the day.
I just may have to look for another app to do my work. not ready to spend $$$ nor switch to 365 either for word.

wonder what others are opting to use if wanting to get away from word that is not supported any longer.

I think many of us grew up with Wordperfect. I still have a set of floppy disks in my old storage desk for Wordperfect 5.1. It's still my favorite word processor program.

Why don't you use Pages? Unless you're exchanging documents with others, Pages is very capable and easy to use. I actually like it better than Word. Unfortunately, for the work that we do and the fact that I have Word documents going back to 1995, I have to use Word otherwise I would just use Pages.

I tried pages initially but it would not do the kinds of things I did in word... so I ended up buying a standalone version and did not really care if I had support or not... did not really need it.
now tho, I dont know what is going on... the constant reminder to update can be dealt with easily but the slowness of loading is so annoying....... I just may have to take another look at pages... tho they probably won't be compatible to share with friends/family who use Windows apps. and I have so many WORD docs I dont know if I would be able to access or use them using pages.

I don't know what you found lacking with Pages, but we have some fairly sophisticated documents that we use and Pages does just fine with them.

Pages also has a layout format which is great for brochures, try-fold, bi-fold documents, etc. It's really a nice program but may require some getting used to.

As far as Word goes, you can buy a stand alone Office 2019 package for $49.99 US. It's download only and legal. You will receive a activation number from MS. But it's a one time install only which means it can only be used on one computer by you.

Microsoft has stated that they will be publishing a stand alone Office 2021 (non subscription) sometime this year. But knowing MS and their past performance, that may be delayed.

Hi Lori:

Pages can open and edit Word documents. However, if you have a complex Word document with charts, borders, and split paragraphs, you will probably need to do some polishing up to the Pages version.

For example: We have a Word document (specifically a song book) that if we open it with Pages, the verses and paragraphs will appear misaligned. It's easy enough to correct and once the document is saved in the Pages format it remains okay.

It's probably best right now not to spend money on Office 2019 and instead wait to see what MS comes out with this year. It may take them awhile and in the meantime you can continue to use what you already have or give Pages another try.

Sort of. :) Apple Numbers does have the ability to open and edit Excel documents but Numbers does not have all the options that Excel contains. It is okay for doing simple spreadsheets but has limits.

The other app worth considering is Keynote. If you do anything at all with Powerpoint Keynote is a very nice app and easy to use. It can open and edit most Powerpoints. We have lots of Powerpoints, some not in English, and I use Keynote to open them and do a presentation.

so I thought I would try PAGES.... I remember way back, since I did not like it... I removed it and keynote and numbers from my APPS folders. how can I get it back? can I get from App Store?

I tried to install and message said I need higher OS.... seems that is the message im getting with other apps in the store. .. so I am being penalized because I am still using Mojave. could that be correct.

The problem you're encountering is that the version of Pages, Keynote, and Numbers that is in the Mac App Store requires a minimum of Catalina.

You'll need to look for an older version. The previous version required Mojave. You probably should not have removed them before. I'll see if I can locate the older version for you.

Lori:

Try this this procedure. (I know it works.) By the way, the iWork apps are free for everyone so you don't need to worry about violating Apple's copyright.

How to get iWork Mac apps for an older Mac

1) First, download and install the iWork ’09 trial (.dmg).

2) Launch Pages, Numbers and Keynote, then quit each app.

3) Launch the Mac App Store, and go to the Updates tab.

4) Voila! You should now be able to update the iWork ’09 versions of Pages, Numbers and Keynote to the latest versions. Do so.

5) Once you’ve updated each app, the iWork ’09 trials will have been deleted. Better yet, each app will be permanently associated with your account under the Purchases tab.

If you want to get the iWork apps for free on an older Mac, you might want to get hopping on this trick: It doesn’t seem likely Apple intends the iWork ’09 trial to be used in this way. But hey, Cupertino’s loss is your gain!

@lori5060, When in the macOS App Store, you need to look in the Purchased section of your Apple/iCloud account. From there you should be allowed to install an older version to work with your OS version.

I'm also not understanding why Lori is unable to make that work as two column sorting is supported by Pages. It's just a matter of using the column option rather than setting up margins.

There are many options in Pages that are very similiar to MS Word. It's just a matter of experimenting and finding what works. I can do most everything with my Pages documents as I can with Word. There are exceptions of course but unless you have complex documents to work with, Pages works well.

@chscag, are you using the same version of Pages for macOS?
