Thats GarageBand 3. So, if you press the i button, from the media browser window that appears, can you drag any mp3's to the track window?

Are you creating a new, blank track for each MP3 you are trying to drop in?

I think you need to create a Real Instrument track to import the mp3 onto ...

Yes, it has to be a Real Instrument. Vocals is the best option to use for MP3s as it won't add any special voice or effect.

Drag and Drop is the fastest, easiest way... and quite frankly, the only way I know how.
Try trashing your GarageBand .plst file and see if that helps. It certainly won't hurt anything.
Outside of that, I really can't understand why it isn't working for you if you are doing things the way Pulse-8 and I have described.

Go to iTunes library and make sure the alias of the MP3 is a working alias, ie: when you click on the song you don't get an exclamation mark to the left of the song name.

The songs showing in your iTunes library are just links to the music file which is stored elsewhere on your Mac. It's the same for Windows...if you have a song in your itunes library that is moved from its location on your HardDrive, then the link to it is broken and so when you click on that song in iTunes ... it can't find the original file so it displays an exclamation mark to the left of the song and moves on to the next working link.

I thought that might be why you couldn't drag the song into GB, because the original song had been moved.

You might try deleting the pref file for iTunes & GarageBand, emptying the trash and then logging out then back in. Also check your Permissions through Disc Utility (Macintosh HD>Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility>Repair Disk Permissions)

The pref files for those apps can be found at:

YourUserAccount>Library>Prefs ... delete anything with iTunes or Garageband in it.
