iMac surround sound

I'm new to Mac and I'm under the impression that iMac soundcards cannot be upgraded to a 6 channel card. I bought a THX surround sound system and I don't want to return it unless need be. Is there a way to make my G4 iMac compatible with these speakers in any other way than soundcard upgrade???
