I have TME and it works just fine. I don't think it is a factor in what you experienced. BUT....

I think the developer used "com.tclementdev.timemachineeditor..." as the name of the support files. It was never, as far as I know, named "com.timesoftware..." And you are correct, there is no "helper." I wonder if the app the OP has is a copycat, maybe malware?
That’s a distinct possibility and now that you mention it, matches my own recollection of how it was named in the past. If copycat/malware, that could explain silent updates leading to shutdowns. The older version of TME that I checked was pulled from a 3rd party hosting site that archives older versions of software. It’s by no means a place I would use or recommend because there’s just no telling if what they have is 100% legit.

I did a little more digging into the old versons of TimeMachineEditor. The author's website used to be timesoftware.free.fr some years ago, but today is tclementdev.com. There is a newer-but-still-old version of TME whose helper is titled to match the new domain. So, while obviously we can't COMPLETELY eliminate the possibility that it's a copycat/malware, I think it's unlikely since the naming scheme does line up with the developer's history. However it does illustrate that there was at least one piece of highly outdated software loading up.

Once again thanks for your help with this. Since removing TME, other not required "legacy" apps and updating remaining apps via MacUpdater no further problems and the daily syslog seems considerably smaller. I'll see how it goes now for a few days and then reinstall TME from tclementdev.com and see what happens.
