Thanks! At the Apple Store the conclusion was that this is very likely the graphics card, as you suggested. The faint green symmetrical stripes indicate this.
They must do the replacement, which will cost $171 including labor. Will take at least a day for them to get the part. If it's not that, then no charge, and it's probably the logic board (about $700), in which case I'd probably buy a new iMac for $1100 instead of repairing this one.
If the new graphics card doesn't solve the problem, I will post again. If you don't hear from me again, you can assume that that was it.
