Oh why can't I just fix this with a hammer
Some people do... and have done, at least with similar software... 😇

I don't know if you actually need the software or not but from the little I read it seems that some banks in the uk demands or wants a user to use the Rapport software.

Do I need rapport on my Mac?
Your bank's suggestion to use Trusteer Rapport on your Mac is a great example of the changing landscape of malicious activity on the Internet. Rapport is primarily a browser-based security program that focuses on financial malware and phishing scams, which has little to do with which operating system you are using.May 7, 2014

But assuming it should be trashed, this seems pretty straightforward:

I would guess probably not active but EtreCheck still identifies it as an antivirus app which makes me concerned about what the various files (elements) you have found are actually capable of doing. I would trash them all and see if there is any improvement in performance. Even run EtreCheck again and see if it still detects it as an antivirus app.

What Apple Support is suggesting is a "clean" instal which is not a bad idea, something I do regularly with the release of major new upgrades.

Normally I would erase the HD, something that can be done more easily with Monterey on the new M1, then using a connected CCC clone previously made, just drag the items I want from the clone to the HD.
It really gets rid of a lot of unnecessary garbage accumulated over years of just upgrading over the original OS but takes time. Of course as I tell everyone, you don't have to do everything in one day. A lot of your data will simply download from your iCloud, Contacts, Safari web sites, Email etc.

I tried to chuck them in the Bin Rod, but got this

Screenshot 2021-12-11 at 10.56.35.png

So I chickened out as I have no idea what root permissions are?

I will create a CCC for the M1 now. before I start anything else.

Nearly forgot to ask? Would it be better to use Time Machine or CarbonCopyCloner for a clean install and reload?

Try to boot into safe mode?

It's part way through the initial CCC job on it at the moment, but I will try that a bit later on, thank you Bob.

@john:

CCC no longer works to create a bootable clone on M1 machines. As a matter of fact neither CCC or SuperDuper can create a bootable clone of an M1 or for that matter an Intel machine running Monterey.

Use Time Machine instead. Jake gave a real good overview of the process of restoring an M1 machine. It's very different than what we were used to doing.

Ta Chas. After looking to see if the CCC HDD would appear on the Startup Dish option in Sys Preferences and it didn't I had wondered about that? Still, it has to be a useful addition to my backups, I hope after shelling out 18 U.K. beer tokens on the update from CCC5 to 6

I am not too sure how half of us Apple dunkers would survive without you blokes on here

I will be out tomorrow morning trying to wrestle the control out of my 'Radio Control' model slope soaring gliders and watching to see who takes who out in the afternoon's F1 final round at Adubie Babie or whatever beach it is, so I will see about starting back on here errrr  soon?

Edit : - Chas, I have just had a look back to find Jake's overview on the restore process and can't find it? Could you possibly post a link for me please? (make that pretty please ;) )

I'm having a hard time finding it also. I believe Jake is traveling but as soon as he gets back home and reads thru this thread, he'll respond.

For the time being, don't use CCC to make a clone because it won't work. It still can be used to backup data from your user folder but that's about it. Time Machine is a better choice for backing up and restoring the operating system.

Thank you Chas. If Jake is out traveling at the moment I hope that all is well with him from what we have heard of your weather at the moment. That goes for all of you on your side of the Pond!

I have the CCC copy done already and it won't let me use it as a clone and boot from, so I thought that that would be the same for doing a clone back from it, if I have that the right way around?

You don't need to know what root permissions are. If you want to delete something that doesn't want to go quietly, all that you need is:

TrashIt! (free)

(bad link removed)

If you double-click on TrashIt's program icon, it will delete
what is in your Trash with extreme prejudice.

OR...If you drop either a file or folder onto TrashIt's program icon,
it will delete what you dropped on it, no matter where those files or
folders reside. (They don't have to be in the Trash can.)

You are not going to believe this folks! But this dammed thing has suddenly sorted itself out and has gone back to being FAST again, at least on the web, but it now won't open my PS Elements 2022! So although I thought the problem had gone I still think I'm going to have to go through the clean reinstall

C'est la flamin vie :poop:

You should have popped in while you were here Jake and then you could have sorted this jar of worms out for me at the same time mate :unsure: . I hope that you had a good holiday? Some of it down in the far SW if I remember correctly?

Edit : - I forgot to say Randy. I have downloaded Trashit and some of those files/folders still refuse to be trashed.

We were in Shaftesbury, in Dorset. We spent 4 days there, but all four were pretty heavily scheduled. Planning to return in the Spring, next year, maybe we can connect then?

TrashIt gives the Unix command for files to be deleted without regard for their permissions, or anything else. If they won't be deleted using TrashIt...they may not really be there. You may be seeing a placeholder. Check and see how much disk space those files are taking up.

A place holder? Something like a towel on the sunlounger when you are on holiday? No nationalities, no pack drill ;)

The highest byte count is just 1.5m, so it looks like that could be the situation Randy.

Screenshot 2021-12-13 at 08.39.11.png

OK, if that is the situation can I get rid of them or does it matter if they are left there and if that is the situation then how and why are they there?

If something is only an alias, then it will only be a few kilobytes of data, not over a megabyte.

All sorts of things create various sorts of alias' to function. Once the original software is deleted, all that is left is the alias', which take up next to no space and which don't do anything and can be ignored. You can try dragging them to the TrashIt! icon, but if that doesn't work, I wouldn't worry about them.

However, if they show up in Activity Monitor, then they are still doing something, and you should consider nuking them.

Thank you for the explanation Randy.

I have tried again with the 1.5 meg file. It still won't go but I have meneged to open it, don't ask as I have no idea how? And this is it.

Screenshot 2021-12-14 at 07.57.47.png

A double left click opened the one on the left and as I wanted to highlight it for the screen shot I clicked on the file again and the small window appeared with the options shown. I have no idea what to do with it as I haven't seen it before?

That file caused something to run from the command line. That's very concerning.

I'm afraid that I don't know what is going on with your Mac.

If I were in your situation I would wipe my drive clean, do a clean install of the operating system using Recovery, and restore my files and programs manually. You have too much weird detritus on your Mac screwing up performance and doing god knows what else.
