I like the new iMac a lot. It doesn't swivel, but it rocks my world..with that g5 and all.

- side note: I read that they're working on a new dual processing g4 powerbook before they go to the g4...mainly due to the lack of available g5 chips available at the moment...that could be wicked freaking awesome.

That is not true, they will not be making dual G4 powerbooks. They may be upgrading the iBooks to another version of the G4, but the next powebook upgrade will be a G5.

Do you know when those G5 pBooks will be out? Any time this year?

True, it was stated in another thread that aluminium is for the pros and white is for the people at home.

I also think the design is a little ugly, with all of that white space at the bottom, but i am going to get to see it the next time i head by the apple store.

Yes, I agree with that white space beneath the screen being way to big and ugly...but on the other hand, it's ideal for an office computer, it gives you a lot of space to stick your PostIts... :D

With the stunning thinness of the iMac, All Apple really needs to figure out is the power problem, I am not sure when you can expect powerbooks.

...no.

Let's recap on the events of the past few months now. Apple has stated MULTIPLE TIMES, NOT to expect a G5 PowerBook anytime soon. In fact, there was a report on Cnet today stating that. After WWDC 2003, Apple stated that there would be no G5 PowerBooks soon. Apple stated the G5 would not be in PowerBooks soon SEVERAL times. The prediction for G5 PowerBooks is in late 2005 to early 2006, and there HAS to be an update or two in between.

So what does this mean? To expect dual core PowerBooks.

None of us work for Apple, so we cannot confirm this. So stop acting like your Steve Jobs, anarkhy.

Surely there is no need for post-it notes because of the application "Stickies"...

:/

I think it's bloody ugly, needs more RAM and a bigger HD as well.
Grr.

80 gigs is more than enough if you live with a 20 gig hard drive.

Yes, true!

And I suppose that you could always upgrade it with cheaper, non-apple RAM or something.

You didn't have a comeback for the Stickies though? :p

This is true, yet i don't think anybody expected the iMac to be this thin, and to have this much. I really believe that it could be much sooner than people originally expected. I really think it won't be as long as 2006, all apple really needs to figure out is the G5 power and heat problems.

Grr.

Surely there is enough gigs, and if not you can buy an external HD. The bloody well is enoughspace for RAM. You may think it is bloody ugly, but it has one of the most space-aware designs ever. You can even put the keyboard on top of the footprint, as explained in the keynote.

We knew the iMac was going to be thin (thanks, ThinkSecret). We knew that when Apple said it was going to be a G5, it would not be lower than 1.6 (thanks, Apple).

"all they really need to think about"?! The heat is a HUGE issue. Apple could be sued for customers getting 3rd degree burns...

And about the stickies, what are you talking about?

Yes the heat issue is the main problem in making powerbooks, I think that if they develop a super liquid cooling system, that covers the processor in liquid coolent, that it would be fine :)

It's not as easy as it seems, believe me...

A alternative would be to find a material, that does not conduct heat, and place it between the processor and the chasi wall. But they would still need to address the overheating issue.

Stickies is a little app that "sticks" little notes all around your desktop...just like PostIts...
It's quite old, and it still exists in Panther as far as I know...

@anarkhy:
Don't expect any notebook being liquid cooled, neither Apple nor PC. Such a system takes too much space, and would add quite some weight...both things no notebook user wants.

cc G5 PowerBook, I think there still is a possibility that Apple sticks with Freescale (former Motorola CPU division) and might introduce a new CPU. Freescale's CPUs have a lower power consumption than IBMs.

Yeah, I know that app, but what does that have to do with the new iMacs?

I guess Anna was referring to my comment about the big white space below the iMac G5s screen being a good place for sticking PostIts...
