Firmware updates don't come out very often. Generally, this happens when there is a well-established issue with a certain model. What symptoms are you experiencing that make you think the firmware is out of date?

Has anything changed since the last time that computer worked properly.

For what it's worth, I have the same mid 2011 27 inch iMac, but I am usually running Mavericks Mac OS 10.9 5 and my system information shows exactly the same thing as far as ROM and SMC versions go:

Memory: 20 GB
Boot ROM Version: 87.0.0
SMC Version (system): 1.72f2

hi guys thanks again for all the replies

there is no issue I was just wondering if it should be running on a newer firmware ?

as when I installed high Sierra it didn't upgrade my SSD to apfs

now when I did a reinstall from a USB stick and formatted the drive in APFS it can't boot from it at all ??

is that because the firmware is too old ?

thanks

Probably not, and I would doubt it very much, but I would say it probably won't boot because you screwed up on the reinstallation and possibly required formatting and they can depend on a number of conditions which includes: the type of hard drive you are using, spinner or solid state, internal or external and maybe a bunch of other confusing things Apple initiated and maybe the hard drive you are you using to install it on which doesn't appear to be a standard issue or option.

Why did you reinstall and where...???

Is that 1TB NVME you seem to be using a stock Apple installed drive??? I did not see such a NVME drive listed in the specs even as an option:

EDIT:

hi Patrick thanks for the reply,

I think you have got the NVMe mixed up with my 2013 iMac that's in my signature the one I'm having issues with is a mid 2011 27" model

it has a Samsung SSD in there as well as the apple 1TB HDD

my 2013 machine I did install 1TB NVMe drive in there by OWC

and that machine works like a dream even on Big Sur

I guess I didn't understand or misunderstood your actual problem with the actual hardware and macOS version you are dealing with...
Maybe it might be a bit clearer to some other members and they can maybe answer you correctly...
