Once in a while my iMac, OS X Yosemite will not shut down when I choose the shut down options. Other times, I can't even find the upper tab bar to shut it down. I have to manually turn off the button behind the monitor. I do have an external Dell that runs off of the iMac. Does anyone have a remedy for this?

Try repairing disk permissions. The best utility for this is OnyX from Titanium Software, although you can use Disk Utility from MacOS itself.
