iMac as display

I have a 27 inch iMac from 2010 that I would like to use as a display for my 2014 Macbook pro. I have connected it via thunderbolt cable to the iMac's mini display port and tried F2 command and F2, fn, command and nothing happens.
Anybody have a recommendation?

To the best of my knowledge…iMac's older than mid-2011 models cannot be used as an external monitor. So cannot do it with a 2010 27" iMac.
