When I try to change the icon of a folder, it shows only the image file type —not the image itself.

This has never happened before. I am wondering why and how to fix it!

Thanks!

Welcome to our forums.

How about telling us which version of macOS you're running and some specs for your Mac? Year? Model?

Then, maybe we can answer your question.

Can you include images or screen shots as well?

I have a folder named "Baseball." When I drag a PNG of a baseball to change the icon, the picture of the baseball does not appear.

The file PNG does.

Does the "x" only appear in replies with links?
I hadn't thought of that possibility. I'll have to start paying attention to that possibility. I thought about looking through some of the recent threads to see if that pattern shows up but it's hard to tell since I've already cleaned up some of the affected threads.

Edit: My previous post in this thread has the x and a link. This post has no link and no x so maybe you're on to something.

Thanks for testing Jake. Apparently the presence/absence of a link in the post is not the issue.

AFAIK I'm the only one being affected by this at the moment.

That reply above contained the "x" but without a link attached. Very strange things going on.

I think this is a case that only Mulder and Scully can solve! :rofl

Hmmmm..........

Edit - I thought the "x" was just a character in the signature.

But I added an "x" to my signature...and it doesn't show up even though I thought it should.
Is there a minimum number of characters required before the signature shows?

That's what I thought when I first noticed this problem. Then I noticed three things that leads me to think it's not a signature issue:

1. When I check my forum preferences there is no "x" in the signature included there. Just the Kevin Durant quote.
2. A member's signature appears on all that members posts but the "x" only appears on some of my posts and not others.
3. Signatures appear at the bottom of a member's posts with a faint gray line just above it (see Charlie's signature for example). In my case the signature appears there, as it should, but the "x" appears just below the main body of my post if it's going to appear at all.

Sorry - I was shooting from the hip.
I should have known that you already checked the obvious.

Believe it or not it took me a few days to think of doing those things. I'd like to say it's because I was busy (true) but I also seem to try the less obvious things first. For the first few days I thought it was just another example of my horrible typing.

I see the "x" in my signature finally showed up - so that took a while.

Slydude - maybe it would make sense to start a separate thread just for testing purposes.
That way things are a bit more controlled.

I see the x finally appeared for you. That's where I would expect it to be if it were part of my signature but as you can see mine is in a different place entirely.

Think I'll do that tomorrow when I'm a bit more awake. When this popped up earlier in the thread I was expecting it to be more a passing comment and not have it take up several posts.

Well, at least the OP was able to fix the problem with a helpful post. I think this went off on a tangent because someone was indulging in a little XX. ;)
