How can I check to see how much of my free 5G(?) iCloud storage is being used, using my iMac?
I get ads saying my iCloud storage is almost full (which I doubt) uy you;d like to check.
Also I have various files in iCloud that would be better served by being put into folders.
Is three-a way to create folders in iCloud and move individual files into that folder or
will I have to do that in my document file which may not include everything in iCloud?

Here's one way:

Open Settings > Tap on your Name (at the top) > Tap on iCloud and from there Tap on Manage.

You will see something like this:

S2.jpg
I think that should satisfy your requirements?

Here's one way:

The OP's profile says that he has a 2011 iMac. I'm guessing that he has a much older version of the Mac OS than you do.

So it's more likely that what he needs to do is:

Apple menu --> About This Mac --> Storage Tab

It might take a minute or two for the bar graph to update with complete information. Be patient.

More info can be had by clicking on the "Manage" button.

Have a look at:

If you click on "Manage" top right on your image above, your answer will be revealed.

Look at mine again, it gives you details on all the apps using iCloud. In my case, above, it shows iCloud Photos and all the rest. And you can click on the arrow against each to get more info.

Do please let me know if you run into difficulties.:)(y)

Got almost 2G of photos. I would like to delete the photos from iCloud to free up space, Put the photos on an external SSD, while also keeping g them on my phone, iPad and 21"M3.
If I delete them from the iCloud, I will not be deleting them from anything else, true?
I still have 1.7G free space ,out of 5G,, so I imagine there is no rush to do anything at this time.
How does buying extra iCloud storage space work. Do they take out the 0.99 each month from your Apple account?

Apple will charge whichever account you have set as the preferred or default, in Settings, or in iCloud.

Apple charges my credit card once per month. I consider it a part of my cost of using the internet, along with my service provider's fees.

You can probably get by for a while longer without upgrading by copying your photos elsewhere. Just be sure you have them before deleting them from iCloud. You might find it a chore to manage having all the photos on both of your other devices, whereas having them in iCloud does that automatically. Also, you have limited storage on your iPad and iPhone. The day will come when that won't be enough for you, then you'll have to store some on an external drive, or go back to using iCloud and paying for it. Only you can determine if the $1 charge is worth the benefits it would bring.

Hi Pete - just curious if you're backing up your iDevices (e.g. iPhone & iPad) to iCloud? - you can check by hitting 'Manage' on the first pic below which will bring up the second image - I have about 10 GBs dedicated to backup of my two iDevices, so 5 GB would be worthless to me - I'm on the 50 GB plan (just $12/year) - go to that iCloud+ level and keep your photos there - just my 2 cents. Dave :)

Well, be careful. If you have your photos synced between several devices, through iCloud (eg iPhone, iPad, another Mac etc), then deleting them from iCloud could mean loss of these on the other Devices.

To make sure this doesn't happen, then first go into each Device and against Photos, Untick/Turn Off "Saved to iCloud".

Others may suggest alternatives. But that's what I would do.

Thanks all. Will update to 50GB iCloud storage at a later date.
The other thing is I'm 81 and the Frau and daughter are not Apple literate. Not sure what will happen to my computer once I'm gone. Wife is tech challenged and uses a Dell for shopping only. I have to help her do emails. Daughter uses an Android phone and cannot use the printer I set up for her. Neither has any interest in learning how to use this computer. Plus they would forget everything unless the use this daily or at least a few times a week. Any of you elderly gents have similar situations ?

If you have the time, write a document and perhaps give it to your solicitor (but tell your wife and daughter you've done it!).

In the document, list the following :
  1. your password to your computer / main user account
  2. where everything is - music, videos, emails, documents, browsers etc (your daughter should be able to find her way about?).
  3. any financial details - bank accounts, investments etc - you want them to know about
  4. advice as to where they can find a Mac person who can come over with a laptop and wipe / reset your computer to factory settings, BUT ONLY AFTER THEY'VE RETRIEVED WHAT THEY WANT OR NEED!
Hope that helps?.

Fortunately, my wife is sufficiently computer literate that I can keep her up to date with a document named "I am dead, you need this." I update it periodically. My daughters are also both computer literate and have my main password, so they can get to that document as well.

I have a document "Things to know once I'm gone". tts primarily about bills that are paid automatically and our financial situation.
I'll try to write something up on the Mac. Still have my mid 2011 and need to sell (?) it or trash it.
Also have various gold coins I need to sell as they have no idea what they are worth. Have many foreign gold coins and have some older American gold coins. Two old Russian gold coins are slabbed. My niece said she would take me to get them from my safety deposit box and drive to a coin shop to sell. I Keep procrastinating

It depends on the spec - if it's a bog standard Mac still with spinning HD and less than maximum RAM, you'd not get much on eBay; but if it has a lot of RAM, an SSD drive, and in good condition, you might get $100-150 for it.

Don't go to a coin shop. Good gold - especially slabbed - could fetch a good price at an auction house. For example, NGC, Stack's Bowers, and especially Heritage. Yes, there’ll be commission to pay but you'd get more than the 50% your average dealer would pay.

It has 20G of Ram and a 256G SSD and is in excellent condition but shipping is problematic as I don't have the original shipping container. Need sell it locally.
Just the two Russian Gold Coins are slabbed. Auction house would probably not be interested. Some are just 1 oz, bullion coins: Maple Leaf, Kruggerand, Panda, and (5) 2008 Buffaloes among others. I'd never take 50% for them

If they are more comfortable in the Windows or Android environment that's OK..Assuming for a moment that they have the necessary passwords much of the data that you might have can be accessed on other platforms via a web interface or comparable Windows program.

If you are using some Apple specific programs, such as Pages, consider saving a version of important documents in a more platform agnostic format such as MS Word.

Could also save the document as "plain text" or "rich text" format. Any WP should be able to open either.
