this thing of storage space not freeing up after removing data on an iPhone is apparently a common problem...

https://www.google.com/search?q=iphone+removed+data+no+space+freed+up

only apart from restarting (or force-restarting, which is what I did last night), and emptying out the "Recently Deleted" folder, I don't see any solutions... :-(

I have now less than 5,000 photos, as opposed to the 10,000+ I had before I started... and if before I had, say, 5 or 10 MB available, I now have 645 MB available.... (I just looked again.. I have exactly 666!! lol...)

this makes no sense...

Can you answer what I asked in Post #39? I don't think the images are being stored on the iPhone, so deleting them won't make much space available. Something else is going on.

one of my responses got posted twice, again.. no option to remove one of them.. so replacing text in one of them with this.. sorry..
(you can edit posts but not delete them.. maybe you can delete them under "more options" button, but that button does not work for me..)

when I go to post it says I have to enable cookies (but there's no prompt to do so), so I reload the page, then post, and the post appears twice...

ok, good night... am tired of typing on the phone...

no, I don't have GPS maps, videos, music, or anything like that stored on the iPhone, the only significant data I have in there are the photos.. (I also have two short family videos, but I can't email them to myself because when I try it just stays stuck on "downloading"...)

I guess I'll have to start removing apps..
this is ridiculous... 2, 3, 4 years ago I had, on this same phone, say, 3,000 photos, and more or less the same amount of apps I have now... and I had, say, 8-10 GB free space, maybe a little less.. I didn't have this problem then... oh man.. I don't know what to think... a flaw in the phone? it is a common problem after all...

Have you tried just powering the iPhone off and then restarting it? That clears out a bunch of cached stuff that could be contributing to the problem.

And despite the hits you may receive on Google, or any other search, it's not a common problem that doesn't respond to what you have already tried.

You didn't say what the results of Settings/General/Storage was to see what is taking up the space. Maybe go there, let it settle in to show what's there and then take a screenshot to post here?

ok I went to storage.. it's the apps.. I don't believe it... I can't delete any more apps than I have already... it's like the apps take up 10 times more space than three years ago... that's wild...
now I guess I should be grateful I just managed to bring it up to 1.16 GB.. I still can't upgrade iOS sw... I'm basically screwed until I get a new phone...
oh brother...

Yeah, the challenge with apps is that the developers keep adding stuff, so they grow over time. As i said, your 32GB is pretty small for today. A restart may release some cache, but you may need to cull some of the apps if you need the space to update the OS, then see if you have enough room to put them back. The OS keeps growing as well, so don't be surprised by that.

I guess I'll have to start removing apps..

At least Apple lets you delete some apps you don't want or need but it doesn't list how much room you gain with each deleted app:

I wonder if the photos on your iPhone could be compressed somehow if you need to keep that many installed???

Just wondering, and no, I do not own an iPhone, I was just thinking and wondering out loud and I would think it should be quite possible to reduce the photo's size. At least once you get them downloaded where are you could work on them.

Or what about using a flash drive to help store your photos on???

I see several on Amazon for storing a terabyte of photos for under $30 that plug into an iPhone. Stick one on a lanyard and hang one from your wrist or even around your neck, or in your purse... ;-)

Photos don't compress very much, so not much to be gained that way, I think.

That's too bad, I guess I forgot about that major detail, at least as far as photo files compression goes.

kali89, I assume you can no longer sync your iPhone with your computer? It seems like we covered that possibility but I can't see where. I remember you are waiting on a new MacBook but don't have it yet.

When you go into Settings > General > iPhone Storage, what are the top 3-5 apps and how much space do they each take up?

Here's what my iPhone looks like:

hi... I want to thank everyone for your help with my iCloud problem... so sorry I hadn't posted this earlier... I was having so many problems with that phone...
in the end I was able to free up about 2 GB of space, but: I bought a new phone today!!
so switched from iPhone 6 to 12.. yilkes!!
no home button... 🙁 I don't like that at all..

one prob I'm having: don't have wifi at home, restored from iCloud in a coffee shop, but: WhatsApp was taking so long (was stuck, actually.. I couldn't tell if it was really stuck or just taking too long..) now have to wait till I get to a place with public wifi again and hope it finishes restoring (maybe I should uninstall WA app & reinstall?)

again.. thank you so much to everyone for your help.. I hope this long thread with lots of useful info has helped others..

I have more q's re new phone, but of course that's for another thread...

PS: I finally get my new MBP on Thursday!! 🙂

@kali89

Good luck with the new iPhone and the new MBPro!

Never mind the absent Home Button; you'll get used to that in no time.
