When I mentioned them in my post, I was talking about the keyboard Up/Down keys. Just for clarification.
The up and down keys on the keyboard just move the email within the frame!

so which arrows are you talking about in MacOS.
I'm not. You said iOS, which is on the iPhone, and which has up/down arrows. On the Mac the up/down keys move the focus of Mail up and down, as I said.

Me, too, Bob. The arrow keys just move the highlighted message focus, not the messages themselves. I'm dropping out of this thread as I clearly do not understand what @Jimmysb is talking about any more.

My original comment was about not being able to move from one email to the next on my Mac, as I can on my iPhone or iPad, my error was incorrectly using IOS instead of MacOS.

I believe @Rod is correct, that it depends on the View settings options.
