The keyboard viewer is no longer a default option in Big Sur.

I guess that answers Ian's question about the old Keyboard Viewer...

Yeah, unless you have an input method other than English (UK, US, CAN, AUS) selected such as an Asian language, the keyboard input will not show up in the top menubar. Without that, no keyboard viewer.

I'm going to search for a third party keyboard viewer to see if there is one that's easier to use now that Apple has changed how to access it.

Patrick, I'm very grateful for your support. What is Keyboard Viewer? I can access Keyboard via System Preferences but doesn't help.

I'm on macOS 11 Big Sur 11.1 if that makes a difference. Sorry for this.

Ian

Ian, in case you were interested, here's how the Keyboard Viewer used to work In earlier Mac OS versions:

It was also often used just to test keyboard import as well as Mouse clicks.

@Rod,

The Mac in question is the iMac shown under my avatar. I installed BS over Mojave which shipped with the iMac. **I'm a bit uncomfortable about undertaking true clean installs and I reckoned that as this was the first upgrade on the iMac, it was reasonable to put BS over Mojave.

**I don't trust myself to do this properly and it is, I believe, very time-consuming as well.

Not really time consuming, especially if you have a TM backup.

I originally installed macOS 11, over macOS 10.15. Then about 2 weeks ago, I did a clean install of Big Sur. I then used the migration option when setting up the Mac.

I don't know how long a BS Install usually takes, but Apple lately seems to imply and suggest just running the Recovery Install over again, almost like running any of the Combo Updates that used to be a standard fix when some things aren't just quite as they should be after a macOS Install.

From my experience and from some Mac articles I have read, they seem to agree That there doesn't seem to be any real advantage for doing a clean install.

Besides, ignoring the Huge amount of time it can take, I guess for some it does create a "Feel Good" Feeling and there shouldn't be too many bits of old trash lying around after they have finished.

Hiya Ian, well I don't know if something has slipped in my preferences but nothing shows under anybody's avatars on my browser display any more, just the avatar and membership status.
Anyhow as Patrick suggests just a reinstall from Recovery should do the trick if it's going to. No need to go to the time and trouble of a "clean" instal or simply wait til the update, as you suggested, which may achieve the same result.

FOLLOW UP:

I was pushed to reinstall BS because Disk Utility started behaving oddly. I did that this morning. DU works perfectly. The system seams snappier, but the click issue - if it really is an issue - remains.

To be clear on this - the very first time I open an app, it takes one click. Let's say it is Safari. I move on to other things. Safari is still open on its own Desktop. I need two separate clicks to open the window. And that applies to Mail, Contacts, more or less all apps as far as I can see.

Anyway, I'm happy I took the plunge and reinstalled. Both the iMac and I feel more confident :) .

I have a few apps open on separate desktops (Spaces). Only one click is required to get to that app. Look in System Preferences > Mission Control, and what options are enabled? Personally, I usually use the Magic Mouse swipe feature to get to different apps.

Me too. But sometimes it's just as quick to click especially if one app is on Desktop 1 and the one you want is on Desktop 6.

Maybe 11.2 will bring some relief?

Thanks for your interest & comments, Bob.

Well it's sounds like reinstalling helped but maybe there's still something else. At least it's not disabling. Stick with it, we'll work it out.

Apple has announced the Gold Release of the 11.2 beta to developers and the public. One of the big fixes in this release is repairing Blue Tooth. That of course will impact the Magic Keyboard models, Magic Mouse 2 and the Magic Trackpad 2.

We should see the final release of 11.2 to the general public within the next few weeks.

Hopefully that will cure the two clicks that Ian has had to do when opening apps from the Dock.

Further Follow Up

Installed 11.2 this evening. Absolutely no problem there. But the "two Clicks" to access an open app persists.

I don't have a problem with this as everything else seems to work okay.:unsure::(

It is strange Ian that no one else seems to be reporting the double click to open apps. I was hoping that 11.2 would fix that for you.

I may have skipped over some posts and missed something here, but a quick google search shows that you are not alone, and the problem has existed on and off for some time.

There seem to be some good suggestions but i don't know if you have tried them or not.

And I assume you have tried changing your System Preferences -> Mouse -> “Double-Click Speed” settings, or what about deleting that particular .plist file???

Also, have you tried another mouse or input device???

@Patrick,

As always, I am grateful for your contribution. The problem being addressed in your interesting Link is where a Single Click is registered as a Double Click.

My difficulty is that to activate an app already open, takes two Clicks - not a double click - but two separate clicks. Say I have Safari, Contacts, and Mail open. I'm working in Mail. I then go to open/activate Safari. This should take one click. Instead, I click once. Nothing. I could wait for 10 seconds before I give a second Click, then Safari becomes active.

Obviously, I don't actually wait 10 seconds; I'm just stressing that the gap between the first and second clicks is irrelevant. One second or 10, it then activates.

I can live with this as all other functions seem to behave normally. Life, eh?

I guess I could go back and glance over the posts and maybe discover what most or clicking device you use???

And what happens when booted in Safe Boot Mode??

Not exactly what you want, but if you happen to use an extended keyboard, I find the SimpleKeys utility really handy to launch or open the applications I often use, just using the designated function (F) keys. piDog Software.

Ian, I have tried to duplicate your issue in just about every way I can think of without any success. You say, "My difficulty is that to activate an app already open, takes two Clicks" so I take it from that you are using one desktop as opposed to multiple (like me) and you have closed an app by clicking the red dot. Then you have to click it twice in the Dock to reopen it's window.
So when you launch an app that is not already launched does that take two click as well or just one?
