I bought a hub with SD card slot, for my Macbook M3 air. When I plugged the hub in the 'Air' it said I was connecting a USB 2 device. When I transferred the photos on my SD card to my HD, it was painfully slow, clearly USB 2 speed. It would seem it is not as fast as claimed. In the past with my other card reader it was much faster. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced hub with SD card slot, that is know to be fast? If necessary I don't mind a separate SD card reader, and separate hub with USB and HDMI slots.

I have no experience with such devices and I have no idea what device model you purchased or what you paid for it, but there's probably a very good reason why those wanting a faster hub that is not compatible pay a bit more with one of the options available from Max sales.com.

I'm sure they could provide you with a good unit at a reasonable price if you give them a call and I'm sure they could answer any of your questions.

No affiliation with them, just a satisfied user and customer over the years.

Edit:
Here are some URLs for some information you already know about and for a new recommendations to get a decent unit for the price you want to pay:

Hopefully, there is some useful information there and not just advertising links.

Hello - if a hub is not important, a small dedicated card reader may fit your needs? Although I own a small Anker hub for my M2 MacAir, I rarely have a need - for SD cards I use the Anker USB-C card reader below (purchased from Amazon) - accepts multiple standard and micro types and when connected to a fast port (as your M3 would have..), then up to 5 Gbps speeds should be possible (but dependent on the speed limitations of the SD cards used). And then there's the variations in speeds depending on the quality and build of the cable being used if and when a cable is added to the connection mix. Normal cables and connectors are capable of obtaining the speeds they are supposed to be able to run at.

So many variables to consider...

Thanks, I do have other Anker products and they tend to be good. I have been thinking of having a separate card reader as I do a lot of photography and speed is important.

On a different note, I bought an Anker 13 in 1, USB-C dock/hub. It's this one, it has all the ports I can use. The only drawback is using dual monitors, I have to plug one directly in to my basic 2024 M4 MBP, and the other can take advantage of the DisplayPort connection. That means I have to unplug only 2 cables to "go" quickly, the USB-C cable to the hub and the HDMI cable.

But I usually have 3 SSD drives constantly connected, 1 - 2TB SSD for TM and 2 - 1TB Media & 500GB SSD Data. I also have 2 USB3 HDD (2TB & 1TB) drives connected for media, so I can watch either TV Shows or Movies as needed.
