Huawei E173 stopped working on iMac OX Y Yosemite 10.10

Hi everyone. My brother's Huawei E173 modem stopped working. His is an iMac running OS Y Yosemite version 10.10, and whenever he tries to run the modem he gets a "Connection Terminated" message. Could you please help? I'll be relaying the instructions to him, and he's not that computer savvy (neither am I), so dummy-friendly instructions would be highly appreciated!

From some quick Google searches, it seems almost amazing that he was lucky that he was even able to get it working with his Mac regardless of OS X version:

I'd look for something that has better reviews and better Mac compatibility and buy that, and won't bother asking for more details of his setup etc., that's probably just more waste of time. Sorry. but not worth the hassle.

Thanks for the response! Unfortunately we are not given a choice in this matter. The Huawei is the modem rented to us by our internet provider, and we have to make do with it. It had been working fine for more than a year.

I found threads on similar problems in relation to Windows and other operational systems, and people found solutions for that issue on those threads. Maybe the problem isn't unsolvable in this particular case either?

You didn't really say. But what if the problem is the modem? If the modem has problems…and you're renting it…return it for another unit.

Hi Nick. The modem still works normally on my father's computer (and old PC). It's really the iMac that stopped running it.

I found that someone facing the same problem on Windows managed to solve it by uninstalling and then reinstalling all USB controllers. I am thinking of telling my brother to do the same, but I wanted to ask something first. In the case of Windows, if you uninstall the USB controllers and restart the computer, Windows automatically reinstall them for you. Would OS X do that as well?

It seems that Yosemite has added even more "features", whether desirable or not!!

Also, the Huawei site has some fairly recent Mac 10.10.x Yosemite software you might try and check on that might need to be installed or at least checked on:
