Is there something I can download that monitors hard drive temperature, RAM use, etc. to prevent overclocking and the like?

Typing text is lagging and my MacBook fan's getting loud. What should I do?

Check your activity monitor to see what programs are running and eating up resources.

Something called 'mds' is using up the highest percentage of resources, according to the CPU monitor. What is this and how can I close it? It's gotten to the point where as soon as Leopard boots up, the fan goes crazy.

I got the 2GB RAM and it's still going crazy. I will be browsing a random site with Opera and suddenly it's using up 99% of resources, according to the iSlayer activity monitor, while the fan gets loud and the little pinwheel cursor spins for minutes on end. Why is this?!? I upgraded the RAM to avoid stupid crap like this. Help!
