My group at work has been outfitted with MacBook Pros. We are to be doing our development work on those machines. Our development setup currently looks like this
- Netbeans
- VirtualBox with a Windows virtual machine on which we run an Oracle instance
- GitX
I would like to be able to do development work from home without having to lug my laptop back and forth to/from the office. In my old Windows-based setup, I would just VPN into the work network, Remote Desktop into my Windows machine, and run my apps as if I were in the office. From what I understand, the closest thing I can get to this on my Mac is VNC'ing into it, and the VNC experience is dreadfully slow as compared to Remote Desktop experience. (Maybe it's how I've set it up?)
I explored trying to ssh -X into my MacBook Pro from my MacBook Air and running Netbeans such that the display would export to the Air, but attempting to run applications in an X11 ssh session only caused Netbeans to launch on the MacBook Pro's display. (I remember reading somewhere that this just wouldn't work because the native Mac applications were not using X windowing system?) This would have been my ideal setup were I able to get this to work.
Are there any other options for me to get this to work, or am I going to have to carry this darn laptop during my commute every time I need to do work at home? (LogMeIn is *not* an option for me.)
Please help a noob out. Many thanks in advance!
