I hope I'm using the right terminology.

When I go to websites, I don't want some of them to know my IP address, i.e. I am interested in renting an apartment, and sent request to realtor's website and was freaked out when realtor's website had my IP address (it was included in email reply).

I understand there are several free proxy webservers, but they either have limited functionality, or they have a ton of ads.

Are there alternate ways to hide one's IP address? Below is my impression

- somehow, create a program for Mac OS that makes Safari use some proxy.pac (this seems really challenging)

- create a boot usb that loads Mac OS (i already created boot usb for ubuntu to use on a Dell machine - had to use a friend's Windows XP)

- configure home wireless network to use NAT (I've heard of this, never tried it)

What do you think?

Every web site you have ever visited has your IP address.

This is really not a concern unless you're doing something illegal. The realtor in question does not have and cannot get (without a court order) your name, street address, phone number, etc. unless you give it to them. The realtor has no way of contacting you via the IP address. All that gives them is the approximate city and who you're using for your ISP.

Great replies!

Of course, webpages one visits has the visitor's IP address, including mac-forums.

I was concerned about giving the realtor more information than they needed, but now, they would need a court order, which is something entirely different.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about. And quite honestly, even with a proxy, if someone really wants to know your IP, they'll get it. You can never be completely anonymous.
