How to check RAM usage?

How do I check how much RAM my MBP is currently using and what is the max I should be running before I start shutting down applications.

go on apple website and search for a widget called istat i think it is.

iStat is definitely recommended. I prefer the Menu edition to the Widget. Displays any piece of information about your computer you could want to know.
