kali89, it sounds like your MBP is running an operating system too old to open the current App Store application.
Have a look under the Apple Menu (top left) and let us know what model/year your MBP is and most importantly, what MacOS it's running.
Let us know what you find.
For me, on a 2015 MBP running the current macOS it opens this page; Buy 14-inch MacBook Pro
nope.. not for me, it redirects me immediately to
h t t p s : //www.apple.com/shop/unsupported

thank you..

I can open the App Store application fine, and can upgrade anything I want under the "upgrades" list.. I don't understand why I can't download an Apple app without upgrading the App Store app when I don't need to do this before downloading or upgrading any other app..

thank you..

That redirect screen clearly states to download the latest version of Chrome, Firefox, or Microsoft Edge. Why not do as it says? Versions of Safari are linked to the version of macOS you're currently running.
I don't think there are any versions for these browsers that work anymore with 10.6.8..
I have tried upgrading all of them.. can't..

and well, again, that's why I'm in the market for a new MBP... but well, Apple is not making it easy... ;-)
anyway, I'm abroad, maybe they don't even ship to where I am...
amazon has it listed, but not available..

thank you..

I like your thinking but the ESR releases still require much newer versions of macOS than 10.6. The most current version of Firefox ESR that supports 10.6 is FF ESR 45, which was released more than 5.5 years ago.

@kali89, there's unfortunately no way around this - you can't get a modern enough browser on a machine running 10.6.
I guess you're right... (..sigh....)

Have you tried getting to the machine without jumping direction to it? That is, open Apple.com, click on "Mac," then "MacBook Pro" and select what you want? That approach should work no matter what browser.

There are still many users managing to deal with the 'net with their old Mac using OS X 10.6.8, and you should be able to manage without purchasing a new one, but you will just have to use different software and different methods and that doesn't include Apple's Safari. Maybe give Firefox a try anf download their "Firefox Extended Support Release" version that should hopefully work for you:

Don't bother it won't work. Another member posted recently that the Firefox Extended Support Version is not available for Snow Leopard several posts back if you want to check. Sorry.

Yep, finding a way around this won't work, much like finding a different route to a destination is irrelevant if the destination is closed.

Your "private connection" and "date" probkem is no doubt due to the "trust" settings in your digital certificates.

You can read about the problem here, and maybe some of the suggestions will fix things for you from here:

or maybe try:

PS: Have you tried using the Firefox ""Extended Support Releas version???
It may help fix some of your browser problems.

For your "digital certificates" trust problems, have a look at some hit on a "mac "digital certificates" trust" search:

of course I searched for the clock error.. the results were all just about how to change the time on your clock.. lol.. (which of course is not the issue since I can get to other websites without that being an issue..)
as for Firefox "Extended Support Release" it didn't work.. see screenshot..
thank you for your help..

As has been noted, there's no way around this. The most recent version of FF ESR is still going to be too old for you. No modern browser will work with an operating system as old as yours. The solution here is going to have to involve you using a more modern device.

That wasn't even the macOS 10.9 compatible version I suggested and if you ever do need it when running a Mac Maverick 10.9 OS, you could get the compatible Firefox ESR 78.15.0 from here:

You could try googling for a Snow Leopard 10.6.8 Compatible Browser that might still workWith your Mac machine. Maybe low-end mac.com has some suggestions you could check out. But as mentioned I think tme has run out
for such users and machines for accessing and browsing the 'net.

Just to illustrate how much has changed, when Snow Leopard was released in 2009 the now ubiquitous iPhone was the 3G or 3GS the first iPhone (2G) had only been released in 2007. Today it's hard to imagine a mobile phone with only 16GB of storage but that's how far we have come.
The same has happened with software if not even more so. I recall having to apply and pay for a custom version of a taxation application because there were only limited Mac versions on CD while the windows version was freely available at any tax office. Netscape Navigator was the only browser I could use on a government web site which I think was when I abandoned Safari and I've never really gone back.
HTTPS did not exist only universally adopted around 2016 replacing the less secure HTTP form of URL.
Despite all of this change my 2010 MacBook running MacOSX High Sierra can run a current browser, 2016 MS Office and my email client of choice but there has to be a cut off point, sadly kali89, you may have hit that wall.
