how do I use the shift key on osx's on screen keyboard?

I want to know because i have a mac by my bed without a keyboard and when you hold the shift key the letters change but as soon as you release the key it goes off of caps and i need shift to do symbols like @.

You need to turn on Sticky-Keys in System Preferences > Universal Acces > Keyboard

That did not work, any other ideas? because why would they have a shift key if you cant use it?

Yeah thats weird, the iMac has 10.5.8.
