How do i know if i have a Dual Layer DVDRW drive?

i dont see why not, if they ask why your dvd drive says pioneer-108, tell them you bought it off ebay, your certainly allowed to upgrade your optical drive

hahah there are no instructions for the sony drive yet. This is all on wi ndows too, thats my fear.

which powermac do you have? the single 1.8? if its newer than mine, and a dual processor, you should already have a 16x superdrive with dl support. i bought my dual 1.8 like a month and a half ago

i bought mine last week of april i think. Its a dual 1.8 PM. with the sony..whatever drive (its in my first post)

However i might hack it anyways, as i need to region free ability.

how can i test?

well i dont know what to say then. I couldn't find a tutorial like the one for the pioneers, and even if i did, i wouldnt recommend doing so just on the fact that I dont know anyone who has tried it before. The only reason i gave you the go-ahead advice on the pioneer is because TJ and I both did it without problems.

If you don't have the Pioneer drive then I wouldnt recommend the firmware flash unless you can find a firmware flash for your Sony drive.

I didn't know PowerMac's came with a Sony drive. Even in the Dual 1.8 upgraded PowerMac's. On the Apple website it says they come with the Pioneer and its already 108 and able to burn DL.

Maybe Im wrong?

Thats what I thought. But what about his Sony drive? Did they come with a Sony drive?

they do, if you log into the apple support forums at apple.com theres others looking for my same answer.

it was posted earlier, LiteOn CS09 firmware works in these drives...im sure i could flsh it all myself, i just gotta workup the guts lol.

if i know its already DL, i probably wont. However, then i need a utility to allow me to extract data from european DVDs so i can convert them to NTSC

its definately not already double layer, it would be if you got the patch to work successfully.

to you, only the newest release of powermacs come with double layer drives. yours is like mine used to be, a dumbed down dl drive. if you were able to get that patch to work successfully, then you would have a dl drive. TJ and I both were able to patch our Pioneer drives, and now we have DL support.
