[Right forum? It's in Applications and Launcher...]

Search turned up a suggestion to right click and select Ignore. That doesn't work. Nothing happens when I right click the item. Clicking the item doesn't seem to highlight it, so a Menu item would not work anyway. Surely there must be a way. (You can answer even if your name isn't Shirley.)

Nice one!

I don't think you can "delete" an update, but you can "Hide" it, I think.

As I don't have any outstanding, I can't test it. But IIRC, you right click on the shown update and one of the options is Hide.

Sorry I can't be more helpful or specific.

I got the impression that he has tried that method and it is not working.

@toMACsh Are you by chance trying to ignore an update request from a third-party app? I'm not sure you can hide those. See here.

Sly,

Your Link was exactly the method I had in mind. But if it's not working for toMACsh or doesn't apply to third party updates, then I'm stumped.

I don't have any updates pending at the moment to test it with. Might have some due on the laptop. I'll try to check later.

I remember trying this a while ago before mentioning it as part of the Sunday cha. Seems to me I had trouble getting it to work reliably. Maybe the issue was that I was trying to apply it to third-party apps.

I usually do updates but can think of reasons why someone might not do so. The first ones that come to mind are:

1. The new version adds features that are unwanted / not needed.
2. The update adds features not fully supported on that users machine.
3. Desire to run the minimal software needed to do a job.
4. Resistance to change by the user.

I think I would try Option and Command click as well. I can understand why you would not want a long list of unwanted updates not to mention the notification.

From the link above:

This works to hide system software updates to OS X only, not specific individual app updates:
1.From the Mac App Store, look under the “Updates” tab
2.Right click on an item under the Software Update list and choose “Hide Update”

The update I want to delete or hide is for iPhoto. It will not download. It gives an error message. Therefore, it is useless. I want it to go away. As I mentioned, a left click or a right click on the title/name of the update does nothing. There is no response whatsoever from any click. I assume the error and failure of this update is because I have Photos, but I still have iPhoto as well.

Let's try this from another perspective. If we can get the iPhoto update to download then the problem will go away. What version of iPhoto is this?

Seems like this was a problem when folks first started moving to El Capitan. Unless that had the absolute latest version of iPhoto it would not work and could be a bit difficult to update. I think the procedure went something like this but I'm having trouble finding the link. I think this will work if you have previously updated iPhoto via the App Store.

1. Move iPhoto to another folder.
2. Log into your App Store account and click the tab that shows your previous purchases. If iPhoto is there attempt to download it.
3. If the download completes without error launch iphoto and make sure everything is OK.
4. It is now safe to remove the old version that you put into the folder.

I have not updated iPhoto from the App Store before. Here is a response from another forum to a similar post, but with a different focus:

El Capitan users - how to obtain iPhoto 9.6.1 if you can't get it through Apple.

Hello all -

I've created this file to serve as a guide as to how to obtain a copy of iPhoto 9.6.1 for El Capitan.

This will point you towards a "torrent file" that contains the iPhoto 9.6.1 application.
GENERAL DISCLAIMER:
Some folks will tell you to NEVER download "files from the torrents".
I have had no problems doing so at all.
So -- download and run this at your own risk.
I have no problems recommending that you do this, when Apple makes it next-to-impossible to download the files you need from their "official" site.

To get started, you'll need torrent downloading software if you don't already have it.
I recommend "Transmission", which you can find here:
http://www.transmissionbt.com/download/

Download this and put it into your applications folder.

Now, go to this URL:
http://bitsnoop.com/iphoto-9-6-1-q75064233.html

You want to click on the button (located upper-right) named:
"Magnet Link".

Doing this should download the torrent file (not iPhoto, but a small file that points the way to the download).
It may also automatically open Transmission, prompting you to add the file to the download queue. Do so.

Transmission will now download the actual iPhoto file to the location you have specified.
(This is usually downloads, but could be the desktop or some other place).
You can set this up in Transmission's preferences.

When done, you'll have a ".dmg" file.

Now, double-click the dmg file to mount the volume on the desktop.

You'll see the iPhoto application -- just drag it to your Applications folder, and launch it.

Important:
You may have to go to the "Security & Privacy" pane in System Preferences.
Click the "General" tab
Click the lock icon on the lower right and enter your pasword
Now, where it says "Allow apps downloaded from",
Click "anywhere"
Close System Preferences.
If you don't do this, you may get an alert that iPhoto won't open.

I haven't tried it, but if it helps someone else, great!

Wasn't "Transmission" the one that had the ransomware malware in it? The one that waited three days and then locked up everything, including backups made during that three days?

MacInWin, I don't know if there have been recent problems with Transmission, I have used it in the past with no problems but that was years ago. If the OP would like an alternative to Transmission I currently use uTorrent but I used Vuze for years before that changing to uTorrent just this year. The principals for using all are the same, just go to the URL and click the magnet Link. Whichever Bit Torrent Client you have installed will open and offer to download the file.

P.S. One caveat I do have is always download third party software from the developers site if it is not available from the App Store. ;)

That's the gotcha that bit and the problem some got hit with, the hackers got to the developer's download site and planted the infection… and possibly even the Apple Store. That's also why Apple had to get involved as one of their "developers" abused their Apple license and certificate…

I always wait and check and have done for the last few years… and that works for me, but I'm not using the latest in all software cases…

It's a minefield out there! I guess you can only be so careful. That's why this forum, and others like it are so valuable. No matter how careful you are you will get caught sooner or later. The trick is "don't panic!" (quote from Dad'a Army) and seek help.

Ok, then I'm not trying that procedure. I wonder if I deleted/uninstalled iPhoto if the update notice for it in the App Store would go away. First, I have to make sure Photos will play nice.

pm-r, if you try the delete/uninstall path, be aware that the App store uses the Spotlight database to know what you have installed. If Spotlight indexes your external drives and one of them has iPhotos on it (say in a clone backup or even in a TM backup), it will continue to show the update being available. If that happens, about the only thing you can do (and that I had to do once) is to delete all of those external copies then force a reindex of Spotlight (System Preferences/Spotlight/Privacy and make some change, then put the change back and close). PITA, but that's what I had to do.
