Hi there. This is my first post here.

That's the question.

I own a Powermac G4 quicksilver 2002 single 800 mhz and an epson stylus photo 1290 printer with the proper postcript rip software which is epson stylus rip version 4.51. This rip software was designed to work under Mac os 9 but when I made the change into Mac os X with the panther version someone managed to configure it to work in classic so I was able to select stylus rip server and print from any mac os X application while the rip was working in classic in the same computer.

Now I have upgraded my OS to tiger to get the latest OS my machine can suit and for some unknown reason I can't configure the rip properly. I have been searching the web for a solution for a long time but I have found nothing about it.

I have the os x tiger in one HD and the classic os 9 is in another HD where there were kept all the system files as they were when this was the OS 9 boot HD when I worked on that OS. The rip software sseems to be properly installed and I can run it under classic but when I go to the printer prefences panel and try to add this printer to the list it doesn't appear in the list. I have the appletalk properly activated both in the os x and classic prefences.

Well, i think this is the explanation of my issue, I know it's been quite long but I would like to be as much accurate as I could describing the situation.

It would be perfect if somenone could list here all the steps to follow from the beginning to install this rip so I would learn to do it by myself and fix the possible issue.

Thank you very much.

Hi. No, I can't see the postcript printer in the tiger printer preference panel list so I can't select it to create a printer job list. The only printer I see is the epson stylus color 1290 which is not a postscript printer and I have properly configured and works well but now I want to take the next step and make it to print with this printer but through the rip software but I can't configure it at all.

Do you know how to do it?

Thanks

Right I see

The printer you have is the stylus color 1290, but the rip software you have for it is OS 9 only

Your best bet is not to continue to struggle with getting an old oS 9 RIP to work with that printer, there is another RIP you can use.

Simply put, either use acrobat professional or Tigers built in PDF ripper (the preview button in all OS X print dialogues) to create a hires PDF file

You can then print from this file direct to the printer

I know this is not a RIP in the classic sense, but print ready PDF files are doing the same job as a classic RIP from the old days

Even professional litho print houses now use PDF workflow, so it doesn't matter if you send them Quark, postscript, Indesign or whatever files, your job will be converted to PDF and sent to the press.

Acrobat is an excellent software RIP and will ensure that you no longer need that old OS 9 software

It's a good idea.

I use to work with pdfs printed with adobe pdf printer from several design software both to send samples in low res for correction and send to the press in high res. I will try it.

Thank you very much!
