Hey, like the tittle says i need help buying an old iMac late 2009 , and i have never used a "core 2 dou processor" , i currently own a macbook air early 2014 with intel core i5 processor and hd 5000 graphics, 4 gigs ram and 128 SSD the base model. Compare to that how slow will the core 2 dou iMac late 2009 will run? the 2009 iMac is a base model 3.06 intel core 2 dou. 4 gigs memory, NVIDIA geforce 9400 graphics. PLEASE HELP! more indepth the better! thanks !

We really need more information here. Why on earth would you want to get an outdated machine that is far slower than the one you already have?

@chas_m Thanks for your reply. The reason I asked this question is because I want to purchase an old iMac LATE 2009 iMac 21.5 inch base model for family basic use. It has a Intel core 2 duo processor, I'm not too good with old generation processors so I just want to how would if perform when you compare with early 2014 MacBook Air 13.3 inch base model Intel core i5. Would it be significantly slower or just a Bit.

I would guess the MBA is likely anywhere between 50% to 400% faster than that iMac in every aspect you can throw at it.

I'm going to show you how to look it up for yourself rather than depending on others to do it for you.

First go to everymac.com, look up the 2 computers you want to compare. There you can find the CPU model #, the GPU info, etc.

Open a new tab and go to passmark.com and head for the Benchmarks tab. There you will find benchmarks for CPUs, Graphics, Hard drives, etc. where you can look up and compare to your heart's content.

A couple of hints to get you started:
I'll guess both of those CPUs will be in the mid range CPU chart.
Once there, press "command" and "F" which will open a search (or Find) box so that you can enter the model # of what you are looking for.

I really appreciate your help, do you think buying the iMac Late 2009 21.5 for 340 is worth the money, Is it really going to be significantly slower when I use it in daily life? Not benchmark or score wise. Just basic usage. No heavy weight gaming, video editing etc.

Depends how much is being asked. Personally thin a six year old computer is too dated, however would not pay more than say $200 for one. Staggers me to see them 'offered' on eBay and such forup to $900.00!

But everyday useage wise would I be able to see the mass difference between the 3.06 GHz core 2 dou and core i5 1.4 ghz? If I'm not running 4-5 heavy weight applications?

Just to surf the net and look at e-mail and basic office stuff it will be fine. One thing to think about is the life of the hard drive, which there have been many discussions here. I would not pay more than $200 for it either.

What about the life of hard drive? Sorry I'm new to the Mac products and not just super basic office things. I was wondering who it be relatively SLOWER while opening up apps and etc. I know it would take longer to start up and close cause the new ones have ssd
